The 2013-14 Apprentice School Top 10 Moments countdown concludes today with a grand opening – the first basketball games in the new Apprentice Athletic Center.
On January 17, the annual Martin Luther King Classic took on an extra meaning as that was the first night of games in the new facility. A packed house saw the Lady Builders take on Bennett College, while the men’s team took on Lindenwood University-Belleville (IL).
In the opener, the Lady Builders jumped out quickly as Courtney Collins scored the first points in the new facility with a layup five seconds into the game. That started an 11-2 run over the first 5:12 as the Lady Builders rolled to a 95-34 win over the Belles. Collins paced three in double figures with 20 points, while April McCoy had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
In between games a special ceremony took place as former championship teams were able to reveal United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championship banners. Also, senior golfer Ben Hunter was presented a national championship ring in recognition of his two USCAA Championship wins.
Following that was the men’s contest against the Lynx in a see-saw affair that saw 15 ties and 17 lead changes. Sophomore Jay Melendez scored the first points in the new facility with a 3-pointer 26 seconds into the contest. That was the first of seven 3-pointers he made going 7-for-10 to set a single-game record for 3-point percentage at 70% and finished with a game –high 30 points.
The Lynx pulled away in the final minutes to score a 78-74 win over the Builders. To show the strength of the Lynx, two weeks later they went on the road and scored a win over the top-ranked NAIA Division I (scholarship) program and earned a bid to the NAIA Division I National Championships.
