Coming in at #7 on the 2013-14 Apprentice School Top 10 Moments countdown is an early March showing by both basketball teams as they each made the semifinals at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships. Ironically, both teams took on the same school in their openers.
The Lady Builders entered the tournament as the #4-seed and took on #5-seed Rochester College (MI) on March 5 in Uniontown, PA. Both teams struggled to get accustomed to the national tournament as a Shanae Hilliard 3-pointer almost eight minutes into the game gave the Lady Builders a 5-4 lead. That 3-ball was the start of a key 16-0 run for The Apprentice School as a Courtney Collins layup put them ahead 18-4 with 7:06 left.
In the second half, the Lady Builders scored eight of the first 10 points to take a 37-22 lead on a Hilliard layup with 17:47 left. They never held a lead under double digits the rest of the game en route to a 74-59 win.
A couple hours later, the men’s team took on the defending USCAA National Champions also from Rochester College. After trailing for the majority of the first half, the Builders took their first lead of the second half on a Lance Darden 3-pointer to go up 45-42 with 12 minutes left.
After trading buckets for the next two minutes, the Builders went on a 17-3 run over the next 6:21 to lead 64-52 on a pair of Johnnie Ferebee free throws with 3:39 left as they took a 72-63 win. The Builders entered the tournament as the #7-seed, while Rochester was the #2-seed.
Each team saw their championship runs come to an end in the semifinals, but still doesn’t damper a strong USCAA National Championship performance in 2013-14.
In another twist to finish off the Apprentice School v. Rochester College run of games, the baseball team took on Rochester in Vero Beach, Florida the next morning and finished an Apprentice School sweep of the Warriors with a 4-1 win.
