Apprentice School Athletic Director Keisha Pexton announced on October 27 that Mark Tomlin has re-joined the department as Associate Athletic Director.  He returns to the department after working for the last 14 years in the Prince George Public Schools system.

Tomlin was a 1986 Apprentice School graduate as a pipefitter apprentice.  He played on the football team while as an apprentice and worked in the shipyard upon graduation in various positions including Apprentice Craft Instructor in submarine construction.

He also served the school as Assistant Football Coach from 1986-1994 coaching under Phil Janaro, Norm Snead and Paul Hoffmann.  Tomlin also served as Assistant Athletic Director from 1992-1996, where he handled student government, athletic finances, athletic facilities and was Sports Information Director.

“We are really excited to have Mark join our staff. It’s not often that you find someone with the background that he has in athletics, education and coaching; not to mention his previous tenure as Asst. Athletic Director for our program,” said Apprentice School Athletic Director Keisha Pexton. “We look forward to what Mark’s experience will contribute to our staff as well as the athletics department overall.”

Tomlin left the shipyard in October of 1996 where he went into the teaching profession at St. Vincent High School in Petersburg before moving to Prince George Public Schools.  At Prince George, he served as head football coach at Prince George High School for six years and produced several future Apprentice School football players including current junior tight end Tyler Johnson.  He also taught business and math at Prince George High School.

“It is good to be back at the Apprentice School.  I look forward to becoming reacquainted with previous Apprentice School friends and making new ones,” said Tomlin.

He and his wife Cindy are the parents of Amanda (19) and Melissa(16).  Amanda is currently a sophomore at East Carolina and a member of their track team.  Melissa is a junior at PGHS, runs cross county, track, and plays tennis.
