NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - Savannah College of Art &
Design rode the guard combination of Kyle Jones and Labeeb
Abdullah as they shot 54% from the floor en route to defeating
Apprentice School 80-69 in Newport News on Saturday.
The win for the Bees (13-5) marks their eighth
straight win which is third longest in school history. The loss
for the Builders (8-8) snaps a 12 game home-court winning streak
dating back to Jan. of 2001.
Jones hit four 3-pointers for 17 points and
Abdullah scored 13 points with 13 assists as four Bees were in
double figures. Apprentice School was paced by Charles Holiday who
had a career-high 30 points and Rico Walters who scored 10. SCAD
shot 54% from the floor while Apprentice School managed 43.3%.
SCAD lead from start to finish as the Builders
only tied the game once at 2-2 on a jumper by Holiday. From that
point the Bees went on a 16-4 run to go ahead 18-6 on a jumper by
Wesley Adams with 11:39 left in the first half. Apprentice School
whittled the lead down to three with 4:04 left on a jumper by
Holiday for a 29-26 score, but the Bees answered outscoring
Apprentice 11-4 in the last 4:04 for a 40-30 halftime advantage.
In the second half, the Builders fell behind by
18 points after a dunk from Paul Otim gave SCAD a 59-41 lead with
11:55 left. Apprentice School cut it to six on two occasions, last
one being a jumper by Holiday with 3:12 left for a 68-62 score.
Following a jumper by Davis, SCAD squashed any hopes of a
comeback. After a stickback by Keith Davis they forced a turnover
and Jones drained a 3-pointer in a 25 second span to go ahead
75-62 with 94 seconds left.
Apprentice School will next travel to Latrobe,
Pa. to take on St. Vincent's College on Saturday night at 8 p.m.
These teams will meet again in Savannah, Ga. on Feb. 8 at 3 p.m.
