The Apprentice School athletic department recently concluded one of
its most successful seasons in recent memory as its teams combined
for a 70-52 record winning over 57% of its contests. That
marks the sixth time in the last seven years that the Builders have
won over 50% of their contests.
On and off the field, 53 Apprentice School athletes were recognized
115 times with awards ranging from conference player of the week
honors, All-Conference, All-Region, All-American and Academic
All-American awards.
Leading the Builders athletic honors this year was the baseball
team as they won the first men's national championship for the
school on the diamond defeating Presentation College 4-3 on May 10
in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association tournament
final. Freshman James Denny's two-run single with two-outs in
the bottom of the ninth lifted the Builders to the tournament title
capping a 5-0 run through the event.
Denny was joined on the All-Tournament team by senior Ryan Scott
and sophomores Mike Nelson and Kyle Center. Scott, who was
the MVP of the tournament, headed four Builders on the USCAA
All-American squad along with Denny, Center and junior Joe
Tugwell. The baseball team finished 30-15 marking the third
year the Builders have won 30 games.
A perennial national power, the wrestling team made headlines this
year in January by winning a pair of matches at the 27th
annual Virginia Duals and advancing to the finals of the American
College Division for the first time ever. Senior Micah
Amrozowicz earned Outstanding Wrestler honors for the American
College Division as the Builders fell to top-seeded South Dakota
State. Seven Builders won National Collegiate Wrestling
Association Mid-Atlantic Conference championships while six took
that into the national tournament and earned All-American honors as
the team took third place. Amrozowicz finished his career as
a national runner-up at 133 pounds finishing with a 84-18 record.
The Apprentice School football team came up this year and finished
with a 7-3 mark and a 2-2 mark in the Atlantic Central Football
Conference to tie for second place. With wins in five of the
last six games, and shutouts in three of the last four, the
groundwork was laid for a strong season in 2007. Senior
Olando Robinson earned his second straight first team All-ACFC
defensive line selection along with third team All-South Region and
honorable mention All-American honors. He capped his career
by being named 2006-07 Apprentice School Athlete of the year.
The Builders had six players named to the First Team All-ACFC:
Bruce Freeman, Travis Reid, Jonathan Gladden, Quentin Forbes, Tony
Scott and Robinson. Four more made second team and two were
named honorable mention.
On the golf links, the Builders came through with another stellar
season finishing with a 320.0 stroke average to lower the modern
era record for lowest single season average for the third straight
year. The team took top honors in the USCAA National
Invitational Championships while earning top six finishes in the
Tom Kinder Memorial (5th), Builder Fall Invitational
(3rd), Don Scalf Invitational (5th), Glenn
Heath/Shipbuilder Memorial (6th) and the Wesley Spring
Invitational (5th). Junior BJ Maben was the low
average on the team this year at a 77.5 closely followed by
sophomore Steven Ness at 78.2.
The winter hardwoods saw the basketball teams bring home a USCAA
All-American on each team as senior Termaine Totten and sophomore
Rahshann Lewter earned the honors. Totten was tops in the
USCAA in scoring for most of the year finishing with a 20.0 per
game average in earning his first honor. Lewter, a two-time
honoree now, paced the 18-8 Lady Builders with 11.1 points, 3.7
rebounds, 103 assists and 89 steals. The women ripped off a
streak of 11 wins in 12 games, including seven in a row.
