ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. - Cato Dixon was 3-for-4 and Jonathan
Dehoux drove in three runs going 2-for-3 as the Apprentice School
(28-14) held off a late Columbia Union College rally for a 9-6
victory in day two of the United States Collegiate Athletic
Association National Championships.
The victory put the Builders into Wednesday's winners bracket
final against Florida College who defeated Presentation College
15-0 in Tuesday's last game of the day.
After giving up a solo home run to Matthew Acevedo in the top of
the first, the Builders answered with a run as with two outs Ryan
Scott walked and stole second and third before scoring on a Dehoux
double.
The Builders pushed the lead to 5-1 in the third scoring four
times as the first eight batters reached base. Scott singled in
Eric Polk who started the inning with a walk and Dehoux was hit by
a pitch with the bases loaded to score James Denny for a 3-1 lead.
Kyle Center's single to left field scored Bryce Beale and a
sacrifice fly by Matt Marshall plated the fourth run of the inning.
Apprentice School scored three more times in the fourth inning
behind consecutive doubles from Beale, Scott and Dehoux to push the
lead to 8-1. After giving up three in the top of the sixth, the
Builders answered with one on a RBI single from Dixon to score
Center for a 9-4 Apprentice lead.
Columbia Union scored twice in the top of the seventh, and left
a runner at third as Mike Nelson came in and struck out the last
two batters to earn the save.
Patrick Adams earned the win for the Builders pitching five
innings and allowing five hits to raise his record to 5-5. Beale,
Scott and Dehoux had two hits each while Dehoux drove in three and
Scott two.
