Baseball team sweeps Briarcliffe to split four-game series

HAMPTON, VA. --   In a battle between the last two U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association National Champions, the Apprentice School bounced back from Saturday's doubleheader sweep to sweep a pair from Briarcliffe College on Sunday 11-9 and 6-4 at War Memorial Stadium.

The first game saw the Seahawks jump out to a 7-1 advantage before the Builders pushed a pair across in the third and four more in the fourth and fifth innings.  In the fourth, sophomore Jonathan DeHoux stroked a three-run home run to left field and two batters later junior Kyle Center smashed a solo home run to left which put the Builders down 9-6.  Junior Bryce Beale and DeHoux had run-scoring singles in the fifth and both scored on Center's two-run single which put the Builders up 11-9.

Freshman Justin Griffey came in and pitched 4.1 innings of relief to earn his first victory as he struck out three and allowed four hits.  Beale was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while DeHoux was 3-for-4 with four runs driven in and Center was 3-for-3 with three RBIs.

The nightcap saw the Builders trail 3-0 into the bottom of the third and cut that deficit to 3-2 behind a pair of bases loaded walks to Center and junior J.D. Drewry.  Following a run from Briarcliffe in the top of the fifth, the Builders took the lead with three in their half.  Two of those scored on a throwing error which tied the score 4-all and freshman Ryan Wagner's sacrifice fly scored freshman Dory Fields with the eventual winning run.  The Builders scored an insurance run in the sixth as Beale's one-out single to left field scored sophomore James Denny.

Freshman Greg Tilman pitched 2.1 innings of hitless relief to earn his first victory.  Beale closed out a solid day with another 3-for-4 performance with a pair of runs scored and one driven in.

Next up for the Builders will be their annual Builder Invitational starting on Thursday afternoon at 3 pm when they face Bloomsburg University at War Memorial Stadium.
