HAMPTON, VA. - Freshman Ryan Wagner's ground ball went through
the legs of the second baseman allowing junior Kyle Center to score
the game-winning run in the bottom of the tenth as the Apprentice
School defeated Danville Community College 4-3 on Tuesday for the
400th career victory of Apprentice School Head Coach
Bryan Cave.
In game two, the Builders scored four in the second and four
more in the fourth to complete the sweep with a 9-2 win.
The 400 wins makes Cave the 37th coach in small
college baseball to earn 400 wins and the fourth among small
college coaches in Virginia.
Apprentice School freshman Dory Fields started the tenth with a
walk and advanced to second on Center's single. After a
fielders choice forced Fields at third, Wagner's ground ball
through the legs of the second baseman scored Center for the
winning run.
Sophomore Jonathan Dehoux continued his power streak smashing a
three-run home run in the first. Sophomore James Denny,
junior Bryce Beale and junior Eric Polk all had two hits in the
contest.
Senior Joe Tugwell pitched the first six innings before giving
way to junior Mike Nelson in the seventh. Dehoux got the last
out of the eighth and threw the last two innings to earn the win
allowing a hit, a walk and one strikeout.
In game two, Dehoux was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs
scored, while Polk and Fields had two hits and drove in two runs
apiece in the 9-2 win. Sophomore Aaron Penny went six innings
striking out seven and allowing only two hits, while freshman
William Johnson pitched the seventh.
The Builders will now face St. Vincent's College in a three-game
set starting on Saturday with a 1 pm doubleheader.
