Riley's two-out single in bottom 9th lifts Builders over Indiana Univ.-PA 10-9

HAMPTON, VA. - Senior Alan Riley lined a two-out single to left-center that scored pinch-runner Josh Harrell with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the Apprentice School defeated Division II Indiana University-Pennsylvania 10-9 on Friday afternoon.

The Crimson Hawks opened the scoring taking advantage of four Builder errors in the first two innings to take a 3-0 lead.  Apprentice School scored a run in the bottom of the third as Ryan Wagner doubled to centerfield, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.

Indiana University-PA scored a run in the fifth and another in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead before the Builders started to rally.  Riley singled in Jonathan Dehoux in the sixth to cut the deficit to 5-2.  Eric Polk followed with a two-run single scoring Riley and Dory Fields to cut the deficit to 5-4.

In the seventh, the Builders scored three more as J.D. Drewry drove in two with a single that gave the Builders their first lead at 6-5.  Fields scored Drewry on a triple to center to push the Builders ahead 7-5.  IU-P responded with a pair in the top of the eighth to tie the game scoring one on an error and the other in a Jamie Smith double that scored Shawn Schwarz to tie the game 7-all.

Apprentice School answered in its half of the eighth as Riley started with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Polk.  Kenny Eanes laced a single to left field scoring Riley for an 8-7 advantage.  Once again the Crimson Hawks answered with a pair in the top of the ninth on a RBI single from T.J. Nichols and a sacrifice fly from Schwarz to put them up 9-8.

In the bottom of the ninth after two outs, Fields singled to right field moving Drewry to third who had walked.  Kyle Center singled to left to score Drewry tying the game at 9-all.  He took second on the throw home and Harrell, who came into run for Fields, advanced to third.  Riley then followed with a single to left-center scoring Harrell for the win.

Fields, Center and Riley had three hits apiece for the Builders (12-7).  Riley added two runs scored and a pair of RBIs.  Freshman Greg Tillman came in to pitch the last three innings to earn his third win of the season. Eanes went 2-for-4 to aid in the Builders' 16-hit attack.

These teams will meet twice more this weekend starting at 10 am on Saturday morning.  Maritime College (NY) joins the mix this weekend and will take on the Builders at 4 pm Saturday completing the round-robin schedule.
