HAMPTON, VA. - Sophomore James Denny went 7-for-9 with six RBI
in two games including his first home run and a school record tying
five hits in game one as the Apprentice School split a doubleheader
in the final day of its home round robin Sunday. The Builders
defeated Maritime College 20-4, while falling to Indiana
University-Pennsylvania 11-8 in the nightcap to put its record at
14-9.
In the opener, Denny went 5-for-6 scoring four runs and
driving in a pair as the Builders amassed a season-best 19 hits in
the 20-4 victory. J.D. Drewry, Dory Fields and Bryce Beale
had three hits each to join Denny in the multi-hit club.
Fields added three RBI and scored three runs, Drewry also drove in
three and scored four while Beale drove in a pair. Kyle
Center drove in a season high four runs to lead the Builders in
that category.
Freshman Coire Barnitz went seven innings allowing six hits to
earn his second win of the year. Freshmen William Johnson and
Ben Maddrey threw an inning each to close the game.
The Builders broke the game open with seven runs in the third
inning with Denny driving in a pair in that inning. They
added five in the sixth with Fields and Center driving in a pair
each in the frame.
In the nightcap, Denny started the bottom of the first with his
first home run of the season. The Crimson Hawks broke the
game open scoring four in the fourth and a pair in the fifth and
sixth. The Builders were doomed by hitting into four double
plays in the game.
Alan Riley was 4-for-5 with three runs scored to lead the
Builders' 13-hit attack. Eric Polk, Ryan Wagner and Denny all
had a pair of hits each.
Next up for the Builders will be a road game at the University
of Mary Washington on Tuesday at 3 pm.
