Builders Split A Pair In Day One of Penn State Beaver Round Robin


MONACA, PA. - The Apprentice School baseball team split a pair of games on Saturday at the Penn State Beaver Round Robin.  In the opener, the Builders defeated Rochester College 7-0 and then lost 5-3 to the host Nittany Lions.

Against Rochester, senior Joe Tugwell threw a complete-game two-hitter and junior J.D. Drewry was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the 7-0 win.  The Builders scored four in the first inning on an RBI single from freshman Dory Fields, a groundout from junior Bryce Beale and error and a wild pitch.  Sophomore Jonathan Dehoux stroked a triple in the second inning and scored on a balk to put the Builders up 5-0.

Apprentice School pushed two more across in the sixth inning on a RBI double from Drewry and a RBI single from Dehoux.

Tugwell struck out six and walked two in his two-hitter.  Rochester had a bunt single in the third and a single in the sixth inning.

In the nightcap against Penn State Beaver, the Builders took a 2-1 lead after one on RBI singles from Dehoux and senior Alan Riley.  The Builders took a 3-1 lead in the third as Dehoux lead off with a single and advanced on a groundout before scoring on a RBI double from junior Kyle Center.

The hosts then tied the game in the seventh on a two-run double from Joe Scherer and took a 5-3 lead in the eighth on a two-run single from Ryan Raraigh.  Five Builders had two hits each in the nightcap.

Apprentice School will face Penn State Beaver on Sunday at 1 pm to close out the event.
