Baseball Builders Knock Off Elizabeth City 3-1
HAMPTON, VA. - A two-run single from Jonathan Dehoux and a run-scoring single from Ryan Wagner in the first inning proved to be the offense the Apprentice School needed on Wednesday as they defeated Elizabeth City State 3-1 at War Memorial Stadium.
Junior Dallas Wagner earned the victory throwing 8.1 innings for the Builders allowing nine hits and the lone run. Sophomore Austin Leftwich earned the save throwing the last two-thirds of an inning and allowing one hit.
The Builders opened the scoring quickly in the first as J.D. Drewry started the game with a double and Dawson Langhorne walked. Both advanced a base on a wild pitch prior to Dehoux's single up the middle to score them both. He took second on the throw and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After two outs, Wagner singled to left field scoring Dehoux for a 3-0 lead.
In the ninth, Elizabeth City made some headway after a pair of singles and a hit batter loaded the bases they scored a run on a Khatil Butler single to shortstop. That hit came off Leftwich who then proceeded to force Kermit Jackson to hit into the fourth double play for the Builders in the game to end the contest.
Apprentice School now will host Virginia State on Friday at 2 pm in a single-game.
