Baseball Streak Hits Five With Doubleheader Sweep Of Tufts 7-3, 6-5
HAMPTON, VA. -- The Apprentice School baseball team extended its winning streak to five games on Saturday with a feat they had never done before - sweep a double header from Tufts University as they won 7-3 and 6-5 at War Memorial Stadium.
The Builders and the Jumbos, located in Medford, Massachusetts, have faced each other since 1995 and the Apprentice School had never swept a double header from Tufts. In fact the Jumbos had won 13 of the last 14 games played between the schools before Saturday's doubleheader sweep.
In game one, sophomore Kenny Eanes drove in a pair of runs for the Builders in the second with a double to put the hosts ahead early 2-0. In the third, Bryce Beale singled in Eric Polk for a 3-0 Apprentice lead. Tufts answered with a pair of runs in the fourth but the Apprentice School returned the favor scoring three times in its half of the fourth. Dory Fields drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly and Beale drove in a pair with a single to left field. Each team scored a run in the sixth as the Builders took the opener 7-3.
Eanes went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the opener, while Beale was 2-for-4 with three RBIs as the Builders out-hit the Jumbos 10-5. Sophomore Austin Leftwich earned his first victory throwing 5.1 innings and allowing three hits. Jonathan Dehoux picked up his second save closing the contest with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.
In game two, Apprentice School trailed early as the Jumbos scored three times in the first and a run in the fourth to take a 4-1 advantage. In the fifth, the Builders cut the deficit to 4-3 as Dehoux singled in Polk who had reached on a throwing error that scored Andrew Yonta.
Tufts responded with a run in the sixth, but the Builders scored three times in their half of the sixth for the win. Beale scored the first on a wild pitch and Eanes scored the next run on a ground out to tie the game. The winning run was scored on a high-hopper to short stop hit by Yonta that allowed Kyle Center to score for a 6-5 lead and win.
Dehoux went 2-for-4 in the nightcap with a run batted in, while Wagner was 2-for-3 for Apprentice School. Sophomore Coire Barnitz picked up his second win of the season throwing three innings in relief of started Michael Opauski. He allowed three hits and one run in finishing up the double header sweep.
Next up for the Builders will be a three-game set with Fulton-Montgomery College of New York starting with a double header on Monday at 1 pm at War Memorial Stadium.
