HAMPTON, VA. - Senior Bryce Beale went 2-for-3 and drove in
three runs, while fellow senior Kyle Center was 2-for-3 and scored
twice as the Apprentice School split a doubleheader with U.S.
Collegiate Athletic Association rival Briarcliffe College winning
the nightcap 4-2 on Friday.
In the opener, junior Jonathan Dehoux was 2-for-4 and Center was
2-for-3 with a run as the Builders fell 5-4.
After giving up a run in the first inning of game two, the
Builders answered with a pair of runs as Beale doubled in Center
and Dehoux who earlier singled and doubled respectively. The
Builders plated another in the third as Beale singled in Center for
a 3-1 lead.
Sophomore Ryan Wagner followed that by setting a school single
season record - he was hit by a pitch for the 11th time
this season breaking a mark held by Center in his freshman season
of 2006.
The Builders put up an insurance run in the fourth as senior
J.D. Drewry hit his first home run of the season with a smash to
right-center field.
Briarcliffe scored a run in the sixth as Andrew Raschen singled
in Mike Locrotondo for a 4-2 deficit. Sophomore Coire Barnitz
came in after that hit and got a fly out and a double play to end a
potential threat.
Freshman Daniel Lutz earned his third victory of the season
throwing five innings and striking out six. Barnitz got his
first save of the year with his two innings of scoreless relief.
In the opener, the Builders gave up a run in the second and
answered with three in its half as junior Kenny Eanes doubled in
junior Chris Baker. One run scored on an error while another
scored on a wild pitch to give Apprentice School a 3-1 lead.
The Seahawks answered with three in its half of the third on RBI
singles from Dave Darcy, Dan Rodriguez and a RBI groundout from
Steve Shea.
Apprentice School got one back to tie it in the fourth as senior
Eric Polk reached on a throwing error to allow Eanes to
score. Briarcliffe got that run back in the sixth as Tim
Coglietta grounded out to score Reggie Smith for the 5-4 final.
Tabb Griffey took the loss in game one throwing five innings and
allowing five runs for Apprentice School (22-11).
The Builders will now travel to Murfreesboro, N.C. on Tuesday to
face Chowan University in a 2 pm single game.
