Baseball Rallies To Knock Off Chowan 10-7

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - Five different Apprentice School players had two hits each, while three others drove in two runs each as the Builders scored four runs in the sixth and one in the ninth to defeat Chowan University 10-7 on Friday.

The win in Murfreesboro was the first for the Apprentice School (23-11) since 2004 and only the third win this decade at Hawkins Field.

The Builders opened up with a flurry scoring five runs in the first inning as the first five batters reached, four on hits to score three runs.  Dory Fields doubled in Bryce Beale and Kenny Eanes' sacrifice fly plated the final run in the 5-0 top of the first.

Chowan (22-14) responded in its half of the third to score five runs on run scoring hits from Matt Crane, John Kellett and Michael Taylor.  A Zac Caito ground out and a suicide squeeze bunt from Nate Stanton plated the final run to tie the game 5-all. The Hawks took a 7-5 lead in the fourth inning as Kellett smashed a two-out, two-run home run to left field.

Apprentice School erupted for four runs in the top of the sixth as Kyle Center drove in a pair with a single to center, Beale singled in a run and Dehoux hit a sacrifice fly for a 9-7 Builder lead.

In the ninth, Andrew Yonta started with a double for the Builders.  Following an intentional walk to Fields, Eanes beat out a fielders choice that forced out Fields at second.  Eric Polk singled in Yonta for the 10-7 lead.

Sophomore Austin Leftwich earned his fourth win of the season throwing five innings of scoreless relief of starter Dallas Wagner.  Leftwich was in command on the mound throwing 50 pitches in five innings with 38 being for strikes.

Drewry, Center, Beale, Fields and Polk all had two hits each for the Builders, while Center, Dehoux and Beale drive in two runs each.

Apprentice School will now travel to Danville CC on Tuesday for a noon doubleheader at Dan Daniels Park.  The Builders and the Hawks will tangle again on Thursday, April 23 in a 4 pm start at War Memorial Stadium.
