Wagner's RBI Single In Ninth Lifts Builders Over Mary Washington 8-7 For First Ever Win Over UMW
HAMPTON, VA. - Sophomore Ryan Wagner's one-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning scored junior Chris Baker with the winning run as The Apprentice School defeated University of Mary Washington 8-7 on Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium.
The win over the Eagles was the first ever for the Builders as UMW had won the previous 13 games dating back to 1991.
Mary Washington opened the scoring in the first as Will Wright hit a three-run home run to left-center. The Builders bounced back with a single run in the first as senior Bryce Beale drove in senior J.D. Drewry with a single to left field.
In the second inning the Builders scored another run as Drewry grounded out to first scoring sophomore Andrew Yonta who had started the inning being hit by a pitch.
The Apprentice School took a lead in the third scoring twice as junior Jonathan Dehoux smashed his tenth home run of the season down the left field line. The 10 home runs for Dehoux is the first time a Builder baseball player has had double-digit home runs in a season since Tony Brown did it in 2001 and 2002. Later in the inning, Wagner put the Builders ahead for the first time at 4-3 as he drove in Beale with a single to right field.
After giving up a run in the fourth, the Builders responded with a pair of runs in the sixth inning on sacrifice flies from senior Eric Polk and Drewry for a 6-4 lead.
Mary Washington tied the game in the seventh with a pair of runs and took the lead in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Nick Espinosa to score Alex Howell who had tripled.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Builders tied the game on a two-out RBI single from Dehoux that scored Drewry who started the late flurry with a single.
Baker started the ninth inning with a double to right-center and scored as Wagner laced a single down the left field line for the 8-7 victory.
The Builders out-hit Mary Washington 15-6 as Wagner went a career-best 4-for-5 with a pair of Rbis, while Dehoux was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs. Senior Kyle Center and Beale each had a pair of hits while Drewry scored a pair of runs and drove in a pair going 1-for-3.
Sophomore Coire Barnitz earned his fourth win in five decisions closing the game with 2.2 innings of one-hit relief.
The Apprentice School returns to action on May 12 in the 2009 U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships at War Memorial Stadium. The Builders' opponent and game-time will be announced early next week.
