Builders Fall In Twinbill To Elizabethtown

Game 1 – Elizabethtown 6, Apprentice School 3

Game 2 – Elizabethtown 6, Apprentice School 3

RECORDS: Elizabethtown 7-1; Apprentice School 2-3

LOCATION: Historic Dodgertown/Vero Beach, FL

IN BRIEF: Ryan Hendrickson's bases-clearing triple gave Apprentice School a 3-2 lead in game two, but Elizabethtown, which used a four-run third to defeat the Builders in game one, answered with a three-run fourth in game two to sweep Thursday's doubleheader by matching 6-3 scores.

  • - Elizabethtown jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the third as cleanup hitter Luke Gatti and DH Brian Portillo connected for back-to-back two-run doubles.
  • -The Builders got on the board against E-town starter Zack Tomasko in the bottom of the third when Mark Labrador drilled his fourth career triple to the wall in right, plating Hayden Champigny.
  • - Apprentice would close within a run, 4-3, in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by Brian Belvin and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Lee Rossi.
  • - E-town collected some much needed insurance in the top of the seventh, scoring twice to make it a 6-3 game. Dylan Manning was hit with the bases loaded to bring home Alex Holbert and Tyler Weary dashed home from third on a wild pitch.

  • - The Builders played their first game in 19 days after Mother Nature took away a doubleheader Feb. 21 against Penn State Mont Alto and the entire 2015 Builder Classic Feb. 28-March 1.
  • - Apprentice School stranded five runners in the game, while the Blue Jays left seven on base.
  • - Tomasko, who started and earned the win for Elizabethtown, was locked in for the 3.1 innings he lasted. Tomasko got eight of his 10 outs via the strikeout.
  • - Taras Letnaunchyn struck out the side in the seventh to record the save for the Blue Jays.
  • - James Anthony and Sam Massie did not allow a hit in 2.2 innings out of the Builders' bullpen in relief of junior starter Tyler Woodhouse. Massie struck out two in the seventh.

  • - Sean Jones' RBI triple to left in the top of the first scored Holbert to put the Blue Jays ahead 1-0 in the top of the first.
  • - Apprentice School took its only lead of the afternoon in the top of the fourth when Hendrickson tripled home Labrador, Christian Burton and Rossi.
  • - The Builders yielded three runs back to Elizabethtown in the bottom half of the inning, allowing the Blue Jays to go back in front 4-3. Parke Martin delivered a run-scoring double and Frank Canuso an RBI fielder's choice. E-town also picked up a run on a fielding miscue by the Builders.
  • - Elizabethtown added to its lead in the sixth on Gatti's second two-run double of the day. The senior first baseman also hit one in the early game.

  • - Elizabethtown starting pitcher Kristopher Davis threw a complete game and struck out six five days after striking out 15 in his team's season-opening win over Maritime (N.Y.).
  • - Kyle Clark started and went five innings for the Builders. He gave up four runs on seven hits, allowed two walks and struck out one.
  • - Sophomore Steven Conley made his second career appearance, pitching the sixth inning for Apprentice School.
  • - The Builders had a chance to build on their big fourth inning with two more runners reaching base in the fifth. Cody Norris, who doubled in the inning, was left on third and Apprentice School could not mount another threat.

The Builders will try to get back in the win column Friday afternoon at Historic Dodgertown with a doubleheader against Briarcliffe (N.Y.). First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
