Apprentice School Head Football Coach Michael Vite has announced
his coaching staff for the 2008 season. Four members of the
2007 coaching staff will join him along with three new coaches.
Remaining on the football staff will be former Apprentice School
players Calvin Chester (coaching wide receivers), Andre Carrington
(outside linebackers), along with former head coach Paul Hoffmann
(special teams) and offensive line coach Matt Lacy who will now
move into the offensive coordinator position.
Working with the offensive line this season will be Matt
Horton. He joins the Builder staff after serving two seasons
as a graduate assistant coach at Kent State. Horton went to
Kent State after serving as a student assistant coach at his alma
mater, North Alabama, for two years.
While at Kent State he assisted the offensive line, tackle and
tight end coaches with individual and group instruction. He
also worked with the offensive line in-game from the press box and
assisted in recruiting.
He was a starting right tackle for four years at North Alabama
from 2000-03 where his team made the NCAA Division II National
Semifinals in 2003 and won the Gulf-South Conference.
Horton earned his bachelor's degree in history from North
Alabama in 2005 and his masters in sport and recreation management
from Kent State in 2007.
One of two coaches who have coached with Vite, Rich Cline joins
the Builders after a season at McDaniel College where he coached
the inside linebackers. He will take the role of defensive
coordinator and coach the defensive line.
He coached with Vite at Guilford College where he was the
defensive line coach in 2006. At Guilford he coached
defensive tackle Mike Six to second team All-Old Dominion Athletic
Conference honors and honorable mention All-America honors as a
sophomore. Cline also coached Mario Paylor who finished
second in the ODAC in sacks that season.
Prior to his stint with the Quakers, Cline spent the 2005 season
coaching the defensive backs at Moravian, where he was a three-year
starter at linebacker.
After starting at linebacker during his sophomore and junior
seasons, he captained the squad his senior season. Moving to
defensive end, he earned All-Middle Atlantic Conference honors and
helped the Greyhounds start the season 7-0 - the best open in
program history.
Cline also captained the Moravian baseball team, earning
all-conference honors at first base and ranking among the leaders
in home runs. He is a native of Union Bridge, N.J. who graduated
with a bachelor of arts degree in religion in 2006.
Mike Harris joins the staff this year after serving at Guilford
College
for four years as a student assistant. While at Guilford, he
helped with the secondary and served as the team's video
coordinator. He played for the Quakers as a defensive back in
2001 before moving to coaching.
A native of Glen Arm, Md., he lettered twice for coach Mark
Lehman at Loch Raven High School and received the team's
sportsmanship and academic awards. Harris also lettered in
track and field in the weight events for Loch Raven's 2003 Maryland
1-A state championship team.
With the Builders, Harris will work with the defensive
secondary.
"I'm very happy with the staff we've assembled here at the
Apprentice School," said Head Football Coach Michael Vite.
"They're all quality men and fine coaches. I look forward to
working with them."
