Touchdown Travis

Senior Travis Reid has one record down and is approaching a couple more of modern era (1985-present) career records in receptions for the Builders.  His touchdown total now stands at 22 after scoring receptions against Frostburg State and Emory & Henry.  He shared the record with Andre Ross (1991-94) since the end of the 2006 season.  Ross holds the career reception yards mark of 2,544 and Reid is 372 yards away from breaking that record.  Reid, a Goose Creek, SC native had 48 receptions for 798 yards and seven touchdowns in 2006 when he was named first team All-ACFC.  He became the third Builder receiver in the last 25 years to have 100 or more receptions with his four receptions in the opener with Fairmont State.  He also became the second receiver in the last 25 years to have over 2,000 yards in receptions after his performance against Emory & Henry.  Reid has 124 receptions (14 away from Ross' record) for 2,172 yards in his career.

Reid's Top 5 games in yards

Franklin factors

Senior Kyle Franklin through the first four games is just ahead of his career completion percentage at 52.3% (46-of-91).  In his career he is third in completion percentage in school (modern-era) history at 51.6%.  Franklin is tied for third in career touchdown passes with 21 and is three away from Terrance Patrick who threw 24 from 1999-2002.

Builder Block Party

Last year the Builders special teams were truly special as they blocked six punts returning four of them for touchdowns and one for a safety.  Senior Tony Scott had three of those blocks and started 2007 off with another one in the scrimmage game against Guilford College.  Scott blocked his way into the 2007 season with a punt block in each of the first three games.  His block against Frostburg was returned by Lawrence Frost for the game-clinching touchdown, while his block against Emory & Henry was returned by Joe Bruce for the final score.  Scott now has 11 for his career which is a school record.

Pickoffs

Approaching the midway point of their senior seasons, Tony Scott and Franako Smith are battling for the career interception record.  Scott garnered his 11th pick in the home victory over Frostburg State on September 8 to take the record.  Smith answered with his 11th pick at Emory & Henry on September 22.

BUILDER BLOCKS LEAD TO ROAD WIN

Blocked kicks and balanced offense lifts Builders to win at Morrisville State

MORRISVILLE, NY - Two second half blocked kicks and a key defensive stand late in the fourth quarter proved to be the deciding factors as the Apprentice School held off Morrisville State 21-13 for a non-conference victory on Saturday.

Apprentice School (3-2) fell behind early as the Mustangs struck for a 72-yard scoring pass on the second play of the game as Bill Poling found Eddie Hull for the score 58 seconds into the game.   The Builders returned the favor by going on a 65-yard scoring drive capped by a Bruce Freeman one-yard plunge.  Matthew Edelen's extra-point attempt made it 7-all with 9:20 left in the opening quarter.

The score stayed that way until late in the second quarter when the Builders finished off a 13-play, 68-yard scoring drive as Kyle Franklin hit Travis Reid on a seven-yard scoring pass with 28 seconds left to take a 14-7 lead into the locker room at half.

Morrisville State (1-5) started the second half by stopping the Builders on their first possession and scoring on a 10-play, 76-yard drive as Poling ran in from the six.  The extra point attempt was kicked into the middle of the line to keep the score 14-13 with 7:32 left in the third quarter.

The Builder block party had a return engagement just into the fourth quarter as the Mustangs took over eight minutes spanning the end of the third and into the fourth to drive to the Builder 10.  Senior Jeremy Patron pushed his man back into the 27-yard field goal attempt with 14:09 left in the game.

"That was a huge play by Patron," said Apprentice School head coach Phil Janaro.  "Special teams play all around was a big key today and the block kept us ahead."

Apprentice School put on a drive that went 90 yards over the next seven minutes capped by Freeman's second scoring run of the day from the 15.  Edelen's extra-point put the Builders up 21-13 with 7:07 left in the game.

Morrisville State had one last gasp as they took over with 1:45 left on its 33-yardline.  The Mustangs drove to the Builder 44 where they were stopped on four straight passing plays to end any threat.

"It was truly a total team effort, and a balanced one at that today," said Janaro.  "Offense moved the ball well scoring on drives of 10, 13 and 14 plays, and our defense was huge in the second half making key stops.  Our punting was key in the second half when it got to be a field position game and special teams with two blocked kicks."

Freeman was the leading rusher on the day with 93 yards on 23 carries.  He now holds the school career carries record with 629 and is 22 yards from second place on the all-time yards list with his total of 2,261.  Franklin was 15-of-22 passing for 139 yards and one touchdown while Reid was the leading receiver with seven catches for 66 yards.  Defensively freshman Thomas Moultrie was the leading tackler with six.
