Builders fall 50-7 to 10th-ranked Wesley College

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - Junior quarterback Jason Schatz was 17-of-23 for 224 yards and two touchdowns while tailback Gene Knight ran for a pair of scores as tenth-ranked Wesley College defeated Apprentice School 50-7 in an Atlantic Central Football Conference matchup on Saturday.

The Wolverines opened the scoring on a nine-play, 86-yard scoring drive capped by an Aaron Jackson eight-yard run with 6:35 left in the opening quarter.  After forcing a Builder punt, Blair Newman returned it 67 yards to put Wesley (6-1, 2-0) ahead 13-0 with 4:48 left.

Schatz started his touchdown passing connecting with Larry Beavers on a 40 and 31-yard scoring strikes that sandwiched a safety by Bryan Robinson who tackled Apprentice quarterback Kyle Franklin in the end zone as Wesley held a 29-0 lead with 5:40 left in the half.

The Wolverines defense had not allowed a touchdown in 10 quarters dating back to a loss to Montclair State on September 22, but that streak came to an end as Apprentice sophomore Sam Arnold darted in on a three-yard run with 2:19 left in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 29-7.

In the second half, Wesley had three rushing touchdowns, one from Mike Pennewell on a 17-yard scamper, and Knight had his two on a three-yard run and a 13-yard run.

Franklin was 12-for-26 passing for 118 yards and no interceptions, running his streak of passes without an interception to 131 for Apprentice School (2-4, 1-2).  Senior wide receiver Travis Reid caught six passes for 64 yards to lead the receiving corps.  His six catches gave him the school, modern-era career reception record with 140.  He now stands 146 yards from the career yards record.

Apprentice School now travels to Throggs Neck, NY next Saturday for the second annual Mariners Classic game against Maritime College, NY at noon.
