Builders fall 18-14 to SUNY Brockport

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - A frantic rally by the homestanding Apprentice School Builders fell short as visiting SUNY Brockport scored on a Mark Wolfe six-yard run with 4:21 left and held on for an 18-14 victory on Saturday.

After both teams struggled to find a consistent offense through most of the first half, the Builders broke through taking advantage of a 21-yard punt which landed on the Brockport 32.  Five plays later sophomore Sam Arnold scored on a five-yard run with 2:14 left as the Builders held a 7-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Brockport took the opening drive and went on an 11-play, 66-yard scoring drive finishing off on a Matt McCormick nine-yard run.  The extra-point attempt failed as the Builders held a 7-6 lead with 9:46 left in the third quarter.

Following a Builder punt, the Apprentice School defense forced a fumble on Brockport's 35 as DaMario Sampson recovered a McCormick fumble.  Nine plays later freshman Lamar Lancaster scooted in from the two to give the Builders a 14-6 lead with 20 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Golden Eagles opened the fourth quarter with a little trickery as a flea-flicker pass from McCormick to Mike Maciejewski covered 53 yards  cutting the deficit to 14-12.  After holding the Builders on its next two series' the Golden Eagles then marched 68 yards in eight plays capped by the Wolfe touchdown run with 4:21 left for the 18-14 advantage.

Apprentice School had one last chance taking over on its 33.  Following a 12-yard run by Arnold, senior quarterback Kyle Franklin found fellow senior Travis Reid on a 25-yard pass down to the Brockport 34.  That pass helped Reid break the single-season receiving yards record as he now has 879 yards breaking the record of Andre Ross who had 861 in 1991.  Two penalties pushed the ball to the Brockport 19 where the Builders were stopped on four downs.

Reid ended the game with 73 yards on three receptions, while Franklin threw for 107.  Lancaster paced the running game for the Builders with 101 yards on 17 carries, while Arnold added 77 on 19.

Apprentice School will close out the season on Saturday, November 10 as they face Chowan University in the 58th annual Oyster Bowl game at 1 pm.
