2007 All-ACFC Honorees

The Atlantic Central Football Conference office announced its 2007 All-ACFC teams on Thursday and the Apprentice School had seven players named to either the first or second team.

Highlighting that was senior Travis Reid who became the first Apprentice School player to be named Offensive Player of the Year in the ACFC.  The senior from Goose Creek, S.C. earned his second straight first-team selection after a season for the record books.  He became the first Apprentice School player in the 87-year history of football at the school to catch over 1,000 yards in passes as he finished with 1,049.  Reid set school career records for catches (169), yards (2.895) and touchdowns (33).  His 104.9 yards per game average broke the ACFC record for a single season.

Another two-time first team honoree was center Jonathon Gladden.  The Charlotte, N.C. native has only missed one game in his four-year career after coming from Independence High School where his teams never lost in his four years.  Gladden was recently named to the First Team Academic All-District III team by the College Sports Information Directors Association for the second straight year.  That puts him on the ballot for Academic All-American honors to be announced later this month.

In the defensive backfield, senior Quentin Forbes joins Reid and Gladden as two-time first team selections.  Forbes, a native of Chesapeake, returned an interception 42-yards in the four-overtime heartbreaker against Chowan last Saturday.  Had 12 tackles at 19th-ranked Salisbury and 10 tackles against Chowan.  He was tied for the team lead in tackles (65) which ranked him 12th in the ACFC.  Forbes was tied for eighth in passes defended and was ninth in tackles for a loss.

Four players were named to the second team All-ACFC with linebackers Jeremy Smith and Desmond Isaac starting that group.  Smith, from Pelham, Ga., shared the team lead in tackles with Forbes and had a career high 14 against SUNY Brockport.  Isaac, from St. Stephen, SC, moved into the starting lineup at midseason and developed into a ball-hawking linebacker.  A two-time ACFC Rookie of the Week honoree after eight tackles against Wesley and nine against SUNY Brockport.

Senior Franako Smith earned second team honors in the defensive backfield.  The native of Americus, Ga., had a season-high eight tackles against Emory & Henry and two interceptions against Morrisville State - returning one for a touchdown.  Also earning second team honors was punter Phil Caralla.  The Tampa, Fla. native averaged 35.6 yards per punt and did not have one blocked in his 56 punts this year.  He hit a season-best 56 yarder against Fairmont State and had 53 yard punts against Southern Virginia and SUNY Brockport.

Earning honorable mention awards were quarterback Kyle Franklin and kicker Matt Edelen.  Franklin finished his career with a streak of 230 passes without an intercpetion, while Edelen nailed 91.2% of his extra-point attempts (31-of-34) to set school season records in those categories.
