Builders Fall 42-0 To Cavaliers In Home Opener

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - Senior quarterback Randy Hippeard was a perfect 18-of-18 for 324 yards and five touchdowns as NAIA 14th-ranked UVA Wise defeated the Apprentice School 42-0 in front of 1,948 at Apprentice Field.
The Builders marched the opening drive down to the Cavaliers 20-yardline before failing on a 37-yard field goal attempt. The drive took nearly eight minutes which was one of four drives that took over four minutes.
Wise struck quickly after that as Hippeard found Jason Lovett on a 64-yard scoring strike on the third play of the drive for a 6-0 lead with 5:53 left in the first quarter.
After forcing a Builder fumble on the Wise 47, the Cavaliers' tandem struck again on a 38-yard touchdown pass on the second play of a 33 second scoring drive. Those two connected on the two-point conversion to take a 14-0 lead.
The Cavaliers, who entered ranked 14th in the NAIA Coaches Poll, cranked up another quick scoring drive as Hakeem Abdul-Saboor covered the 80 yards on two plays. A 56-yard scamper pushed the visitors ahead 21-0 with 6:20 left in the half.
Apprentice School controlled the clock again on a near 4:30 drive that was stalled as Marcus Bratton picked off a Phil Caralla pass in the end zone. UVA Wise made it pay as Hippeard connected with Brad Ricker on a 44-yard scoring romp to take a 28-0 lead into half.
In the third quarter, Hippeard connected on five-yard scoring passes to Aric Evans and to Matt Barbour.
Caralla was 19-of-29 for 169 yards for the Builders. His favorite target was Markim Gordon with eight catches for 48 yards. Freshman Jusdon McKee had five catches for 50 yards and Teo Ellis added four for 67 yards. Junior Sam Arnold had 12 carries for 60 yards to lead the ground game.
On the defense, freshman Jovan McCamey had a team high seven tackles with five coming for a loss and a sack. Fellow freshmen Mana Ohia and Andre Sanders had five tackles each.
"That's a very good team that will do things this year," said Apprentice School Head Coach Michael Vite. "I saw plenty of good things today and I feel good about our team."
Apprentice School will now travel to George Mason University for a 5 pm matchup on Saturday, September 20.
