Football Builders Fall 20-7 At Frostburg State
FROSTBURG, MD. - Junior quarterback Phil Caralla connected with senior Markim Gordon on a five-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, but the Builders could not get over an early deficit as they fell 20-7 to Frostburg State in an Atlantic Central Football Conference matchup on Saturday.
Each team had a scoring chance in the first quarter on field goals. The Bobcats tried a 30-yard attempt that was blocked by Brandon Boston. On the ensuing possession, the Builders went for a 39-yard field goal but Matt Edelen's attempt hit the cross bar and fell short.
In the second quarter, the Bobcats scored two touchdowns in the span on 2:05. After recovering a fumble at its own 47, the Bobcats scored first on a 40-yard connection from Bryan Brosnan to Avery Willie for a 7-0 lead with 2:39 left. Frostburg's defense then held the Builders forcing a punt to the FSU 38. Brosnan capped off that 62-yard drive with a 13-yard pass to Makhia Cooper with 34 seconds left to give the hosts a 14-0 lead.
The third quarter saw Matt Winnegar nail two field goals for the Bobcats, from 18 and 34 yards out to give them a 20-0 lead. The last one came with 25 seconds left which was set up by a Builder fumble.
Apprentice School finally broke the scoreboard on a 72-yard scoring drive that took only 52 seconds. A Caralla to Bryan Cain 36-yard completion was aided by a personal foul penalty on Frostburg to put the ball at the Bobcats five. The next play say Caralla connect with Gordon on the five-yard touchdown pass for the Builders' score on the night.
The Builders had 294 yards of total offense, with 220 coming on the arm of Caralla. He was 19-of-43 with two interceptions and the one touchdown. Freshman Jusdon McKee, Cain and Gordon each caught four passes on the game with McKee gaining 98 yards. Defensively, Josh Lofton was the leading tackler with 10, two of those for a loss and one pass breakup. Senior Robert Hannah had eight tackles and four pass breakups.
Apprentice School will close out its season on November 15 in the 59th annual Oyster Bowl against Southern Virginia University starting at 1 pm at Apprentice Field.
