2010 Apprentice School Football Schedule Released
NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – The 2010 Apprentice School football schedule was released on Wednesday with four home dates and the return of two past opponents to the slate.
Apprentice School will open the season in Alfred, NY against the Pioneers of Alfred State College in an 11 am start on September 4. The Pioneers were 5-5 last season and marks the first meeting between the schools.
The following week the Builders will travel to Washington, DC to face the Cardinals of Catholic University in a 1 pm start on September 11. This will be the first meeting between the schools since the 1999 season when Catholic defeated the Builders 63-7 in Newport News. Catholic finished 1-9 overall and 0-6 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference last season.
On September 18, the Builders will hit the home field to take on the Pride of Greensboro College. This will be the first meeting since the 2003 season when Greensboro won 20-0. The series between the Builders and the Pride is tied at 3-all. Greensboro finished 4-6 overall and 4-3 in the USA South Athletic Conference.
The following weekend will be homecoming for the Builders as they'll face Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham on September 25. This is the third meeting with the Devils who won the previous two meetings in fairly high scoring contests (23-21 in 2008 and 49-30 in 2009). FDU-Florham finished 2-8 overall and 1-6 in the Middle Atlantic Conference last season.
The Builders will close out a home stretch on October 2 when they'll take on Salisbury University in its first Atlantic Central Football Conference matchup of the season. Salisbury was 5-6 last season and advanced to the ECAC Southwest Bowl game. The Seagulls were 2-1 in the ACFC to take second place. This game will be the annual Trades Day game and will kick off at 1:30 pm.
Apprentice School will then start a four-game road swing by visiting Wesley College on October 9 for a 1 pm kickoff. Wesley finished 13-1 last year losing in the NCAA Division III National Semifinals to Mount Union College. The Wolverines have won the ACFC the last five seasons.
After an open date, the Builders will visit Buena Vista, Va. on October 23 to take on in-state rival Southern Virginia University at 1 pm. The Knights scored their first victory in six tries by defeating the Builders 14-10 in the 2009 Oyster Bowl. Southern Virginia finished 3-8 last season playing an independent schedule.
On October 30, the Builders will travel to LaGrange, Ga. to face the Panthers of LaGrange College in the first-ever football meeting between the schools. LaGrange was 5-5 last season and plays a NCAA Division III independent schedule.
November will see the Builders in Frostburg, Md. for a 1 pm kickoff against Frostburg State University in the final ACFC game for the Builders on November 6. Frostburg State leads the series 11-6 and won last year 35-30 in Newport News.
The regular season will close with the 2010 Oyster Bowl game against Webber International University on November 13. These teams have played two close games as Webber defeated the Builders 13-10 in overtime in 2008 and 17-14 in 2009. The Warriors finished last year 4-6 and play a NAIA/NCAA Division II schedule.
