BRIDGEWATER, VA. -- Junior Chris Virgin ran for 100 yards and a touchdown, while sophomore Paul Morgan threw for 94 and a touchdown and ran for 78 but the host Eagles rode the passing of Carlos Gonzalez with three second quarter touchdowns as Bridgewater defeated Apprentice School 57-13 at Jopson Field on Saturday.
After holding the Builders on their second possession, the Eagles jumped on the scoreboard as Anthony Carter ran 33 yards on a sweep where he cut through the first wave of the defense and outraced the secondary to the corner. The extra-point attempt put Bridgewater ahead 7-0 with 7:30 left in the first quarter.
Apprentice School defense held the Eagles on their next drive forcing a 29-yard field goal from Will Davis to lead 10-0 with 2:28 left in the quarter.
The Builders then proceeded on its longest scoring drive of the year covering 73 yards in four plays. Quarterback Paul Morgan broke loose on a 13-yard option run that was in between a pair of passes to freshman Trevon Johnson. The first one went for 31 yards to put the Builders into Eagle territory. The second one went for 35 yards on a corner route for the Builders touchdown. Blake Penix drilled the extra-point with 26 seconds left to cut the deficit to 10-7.
That margin was short-lived as Cliff Woodard returned the ensuing kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown and a 17-7 lead heading into the end of the first quarter.
Bridgewater started the second quarter as Carlos Gonzalez found Leigh Bradley on a four-yard fade in the end zone. The extra-point was missed after an offside penalty on Bridgewater as they took a 23-7 lead with 8:42 left.
The hosts put another Gonzalez scoring pass on the board as he found Julius Delbridge on a 58-yard scoring connection where he had a couple of Builder defenders attempt to push him out of bounds but Delbridge managed to tightrope the sideline. A failed extra-point attempt put the lead at 29-7 with 1:18 left in the half. After forcing a turnover on downs, Gonzalez struck again finding Justin Bingham on a four-yard scoring pass to lead 36-7 with six seconds left in the half.
Carter rejoined the scoring list with 4:22 left in the third as he scampered in from the five yard line to take a 43-7 lead in the quarter. Bridgewater forced a fumble at the Builder 25 and scored again on its fourth play as Ryan Green-Ellis pushed his way in from the one with 2:09 left to take a 50-7 advantage.
On the second play of the fourth quarter, Virgin busted through the line on a six-yard run for a touchdown. The extra-point attempt was partially blocked and missed as the Builders trailed 50-13 with 14:24 left.
Bridgewater took advantage of another Builder turnover on its 40 and went 60 yards with quarterback Willie Logan finding Tyler Staton on a nine-yard slant route with 9:09 left for the eventual final of 57-13.
Virgin had his second 100-yard rushing game of the year with 100 yards on 13 carries, while Morgan ran for 78 yards on 15 carries. Morgan also threw for 94 yards and a touchdown hitting 7-of-11 passing. Marlon Lane topped the defense with eight tackles, while Johnathan Miller added seven solo tackles and Aaron Finley had six stops.
The Builders gained a season-high 193 yards on the ground and total offense of 302 yards, while the Eagles gained 261 yards on the ground and 445 total offense.
Apprentice School is now off until October 15 when they host Catholic University at 1 pm to start a four-game homestand.
