NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Quarterback Ed Russ ran for 116 yards and a touchdown, while throwing for a pair of scores as visiting LaGrange College jumped out to a 15-0 lead and took a 36-8 victory on a cold and dreary Saturday at Apprentice Field.
The Panthers jumped out quickly holding the Builders deep in their end forcing a punt from the Apprentice five. Thaddeus Greenaway blocked the punt and it bounced out of the end zone for a safety and a 2-0 lead with 12:41 left in the first.
Their offense put together a pair of scoring drives in the first quarter as Russ connected with Devin Billings on a 24-yard touchdown pass with 9:35 left and a 19-yard scoring strike with 4:22 remaining to take a 15-0 lead.
Apprentice School got on the scoring board on its next possession as freshman Charles Broadus started the drive with a 41-yard run down to the LaGrange 32. Following a pair of Broadus runs for eight yards, junior Chris Virgin finished it off with a 24-yard scoring run with 2:06 left to cut the lead to 15-6.
Lagrange broke the game wide open in the second quarter scoring three times on a 10-yard Kent Gibson run, a 16-yard run by Russ and a three-yard run from Aaron Duncan to push the lead to 36-6 with 4:57 left in the half.
In the second half, the lone scoring came on another safety as a LaGrange punt was snapped out of the end zone.
Broadus was the leading rusher for the Builders with 79 yards on 20 carries as the offense was outgained 266-124 on the game. Sophomore Brock Bullock was the leading tackler for Apprentice recording a game-high and career-best 13 with two tackles for a loss. Fellow sophomore Kyell Collins had seven, while junior Marlon Lane and sophomore Ty Washington chipped in six apiece.
The Builders will close out their home schedule next Saturday at 1 pm when they face nationally-ranked Wesley College.
