NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Freshman punter Blake Penix was named on Monday night to the first team All-State College Division football team by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association. He became the 12th Builder to earn first team honors by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association since 1993.
Penix, an electrician apprentice from Jesup, Ga., averaged 36 yards per punt this year with a season-long of 60 yards against Catholic University. He had six punts of at least 50 yards and had 10 go inside the opponent 20 yardline.
He finished his freshman season with the third most punts (62), third most yards punted (2229) and sixth highest average (36.0) in school history. Penix also handled kickoff duties, averaging over 52 yards per kickoff as well as field goals hitting a pair of 32-yard field goals against Greensboro and Southern Virginia.
Penix became the second Builder punter named to the first team All-State after Hank Schmidt earned first team honors in 2005.
