NOTES

BASEBALL
  • Opens six-game week with first road game of 2008 at Division II Virginia State on Tuesday before hosting a round-robin this weekend with Indiana University-Pennsylvania and Maritime College (NY).
  • Builders hold 7-2 record against Virginia State after defeating them 19-12 last year at War Memorial Stadium.  In that game the Builders had 25 hits (second most since 1990), 11 doubles (most in a game since 1990) and had 18 RBIs (third most in a game since 1990).
  • This weekend the Builders host a round-robin with Division II Indiana University-Pennsylvania and Maritime College (NY).  Last year the Builders split four games with IUP and swept three from Maritime.
  • Last week, Jonathan Dehoux was 3-for-6 in the doubleheader loss to Saint Vincent College.  He had a three-run home run in the first game which was his fifth home run of the season.  Currently Dehoux leads the team and USCAA in batting average (.544), hits (37), runs scored (27), slugging percentage (1.000), home runs (5), RBIs (29), doubles (8) and triples (4).
  • Junior JD Drewry was also 3-for-6 in the doubleheader with a double, RBI and a run scored.
  • IU-P will use this weekend to close out a 14-game southern swing.  They are 6-2 (as of 3/10) and play five games before starting the weekend series.  Maritime College was scheduled to open its season last Saturday but the game was cancelled.
GOLF
  • The golf team travels to California for the first-time ever to compete in the 12-team Cal Lutheran Kingsmen Invitational on March 16-18.
  • Last time out the Builders finished tied for fourth out of 12 schools in the Marlin Invitational at Virginia Beach National on March 1-2.  Senior BJ Maben was third in the medalist race with a two-day total of 153.
  • After a blustery day one where all scores were higher than normal, the Builders cut 15 strokes off its first day total for a 324 total.  The team tied with Lynchburg College for fourth place with N.C. Wesleyan two strokes behind at 665 and host Virginia Wesleyan four behind that with a 669.

WRESTLING

  • The Builders qualified nine wrestlers for the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Nationals in Lakeland, Florida starting on Thursday morning.
  • Apprentice School has wrestled in the nationals for nine consecutive years and has finished in the top three in scoring for eight of those nine.
  • Three of the nine qualifiers are returning NCWA All-Americans from 2007:
    • Matt Perry       149 pounds      7th place
    • Eric Lybarger  174 pounds      5th place
    • Justin Gilliard  184 pounds      7th place
  • Gilliard and Lybarger are two-time All-Americans as Gilliard placed sixth at 174 pounds in 2006, while Lybarger was second at 174 pounds in 2005.
  • Wrestling this weekend for the Builders will be:
