NOTES

BASEBALL

  • The Builders went 4-2 on the week with a pair of victories over Division II programs Virginia State and Indiana University-PA.
  • The 20 runs scored against Maritime College were the most in a game since the Builders scored 20 against Maritime on Feb. 17, 2007 in a 20-3 win.
  • Senior Alan Riley had quite the weekend in the home round robin.  He had a pair of four-hit games, the game-winning hit on Friday in the 10-9 victory ove Indiana University-PA and picked up his first collegiate victory against Maritime College on Saturday.  Riley pitched eight innings allowing seven hits and one unearned run with five strikeouts.
  • Sophomore James Denny hit his first home run of the season leading off the bottom of the first on Sunday.  He batted .444 for the week(12-of-27) and tied the school record with five hits in the 20-4 win over Maritime on Sunday.
  • Freshman Dory Fields had season-highs of three hits against Virginia State on Tuesday, Indiana University-PA on Friday and Maritime on Sunday.  He drove in three runs against Maritime on Sunday to tie his season-high set against Bloomsburg (2/21), Kutztown (2/23) and Penn State-Greater Allegheny (3/1).  For the week he paced the team in batting average at .476 (10-for-21).
  • This week the Builders visit the University of Mary Washington on Tuesday and will host New England power Tufts University in a Saturday doubleheader at 12:30.

WRESTLING

  • The wrestling team finished tied for tenth out of 75 teams in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championships in Lakeland, Florida.
  • Freshman Charles Robinson went 3-1 at 184 pounds to take second place.  The native of Mechanicsville, Va. started his march to the finals with a 9-8 victory over Jacob Pomeroy of Marion Military Institute.  In the quarterfinals he scored a 14-5 major decision over John Stariha of eventual champion Grand Valley State University.  On Saturday morning he wrestled Zach Sanford of Central Florida in the semifinals and won a 6-4 decision to make the finals against Josh Fansler of Newman University.  For the season he finished 25-9.
  • Senior Justin Gilliard ended his career a three-time NCWA All-American as he finished fourth at 165 pounds.  The Virginia Beach native started the tournament with a win in 3:15 over Devin Slick from Texas-Arlington.  In the second round he defeated Chad Cook of Southern Indiana 5-1 and followed that with a 5-4 victory over Steven Sprague of Newman University in the quarterfinals.  On Saturday in the semifinals he lost to Michael Gorman of the US Military Academy Prep School 6-5 before defeating Cook again in the consolation semis 7-3.  For third place he lost 3-2 to Brendan Lund of Kansas State.  For the season he finished with a team best 34 wins and ended his career tied for third on the modern-era wins list with 92.
  • Freshman Thad Lloyd also earned his first NCWA All-American honor coming in fifth place at 184 pounds.  The native of North Charleston, SC started the tournament scoring a 21-4 technical fall victory over Luke Culver of the US Naval Academy Prep School.  He followed that by losing to Fansler 5-2 in the quarterfinals.  In the consolation round he scored a pair of wins over Zac Gallagher of Williamson Trade (major decision 16-5) and Phillip Lanni of Grand Valley State (51 second pin) before falling 9-8 to Sanford.  For fifth place he scored a 6-2 win over Russ Korbul of Northampton CC.  On the year he finished 9-5.

GOLF 

  • The golf team travels to California for the first-time ever to compete in the 12-team Cal Lutheran Kingsmen Invitational on March 17-18.
  • Participating teams included: Cal Lutheran, Pomona-Pitzer, Occidental, LaVerne, Claremont Mudd-Scripps, Holy Names (PA), Masters University, University of Texas-Tyler, University of Redlands, Chapman University, LInfield (Ore.) and Cal State-East Bay.
