NOTES

BASEBALL

  • The Builders lost their only contest of the week 13-4 to Rappahannock CC on Thursday.
  • Junior J.D. Drewry opened the game with a solo home run in the first inning for his first home run of the season.
  • Sophomore Jonathan Dehoux, junior Kyle Center, senior Alan Riley and junior Eric Polk had a pair of hits each for the Builders.
  • Center drove in three runs with a pair of doubles while Dehoux and Drewry scored a pair apiece.
  • This week the Builders close out the regular season with a pair of games against Chowan University.  The home matchup is Tuesday night at 5 pm and will be Senior Night for the Builders.  The next day the teams will face each other in Murfreesboro, N.C. at 3 pm.

GOLF

  • The Apprentice School closed out its 2007-08 season on Monday with a 12-stroke rally to take second place in the Wesley Spring Invitational held at Wild Quail Golf Club in Wyoming, Delaware.
  • After combining for a 335 on Sunday, the Builders shot a 309 on Monday to leapfrog three schools for second place.
  • The Builders overtook Wesley B team (321 Monday total-645 tournament total), Neumann College (321-654) and Villa Julie College (336-664) to earn runner-up honors.
  • Junior Steven Ness was the low man for the Builders in the tournament with a 73 on Monday for a 151 total and a fourth place finish. Senior BJ Maben finished in a tie for fifth with a 76 on Monday for a 153 total.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

  • Apprentice School men's basketball players Eric Ruffin and Jason Arrington were named on Wednesday to the Honorable Mention All-State College Division team by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association. This team entails all Division II, III, NAIA and USCAA teams in the state.
  • Arrington was the leading scorer on the team averaging 14.6 points per game. The Norfolk native and maintenance electrician apprentice started the season red-hot scoring 22 points against Averett University, Francis Marion University, Southern Maine CC and University of Maine-Fort Kent. His season best was a 26-point outing in a road victory over Randolph College. He had six assists in a game four times and six steals twice. Arrington shot a team-best 74.1% from the foul line making 100 free throws.
  • Ruffin was second in scoring averaging 13 points per game but added almost five rebounds and five assists per game. The Suffolk native and shipfitter apprentice had 24 points in a home win over Southern Virginia in February and topped that two days later with 25 in a road loss to Division II Chowan University. He had nine rebounds in a game four times and tied the school single-game assist record with 10 against Chowan in February. Ruffin was named to the USCAA All-American team prior to the nationals in late February.
