Builders Rate High In Virginia Sports Info. Directors Association Rankings


 

BUILDERS FINISH TENTH IN

VASID COLLEGE DIVISION ALL-SPORTS SURVEY

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - The Apprentice School won 56.3% of its athletic contests in the 2008-09 athletic season to finish tenth the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association College Division All-Sports Survey.  This marks the sixth top 10 finish for the Builders since 2000-01.

The survey ranks all 27 non-NCAA Division I schools in the state by overall winning percentage.

The Apprentice School's women's basketball team (17-13) helped put the school 11th in the women's rankings with a 56.7 winning percentage.  While the men's programs combined for a 63-49 record to finish eighth with a 56.3 winning percentage,.

Christopher Newport University won all three rankings with the overall winning percentage of 69.18%, the women's winning percentage (73.04%) and the men's winning percentage (63.93%).

Finishing second this year was Washington & Lee University with a 65.20% winning percentage, followed by Roanoke College (64.84%), last year's winner University of Mary Washington (63.24%) and Bridgewater College (60.56%).

Southern Virginia University topped the state in national tournament appearances with nine, followed by Christopher Newport with eight and Washington & Lee with seven.  The Builders won the only national championship in the state this year by capturing the National Collegiate Wrestling Association title in March.

BUILDERS SECOND IN STATE COLLEGE DIVISION

IN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS WON

 

Through the end of the 2008-09 athletic season, the athletic program at The Apprentice School has won a total of 15 national championships.  That total is the second most in the state by a non-NCAA Division I schools as ranked by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association.

Christopher Newport, on the strength of its women's track program, leads the college division with 68 national championships.  The Apprentice School has won four men's championships, two women's championships and nine men's individual championships for a second place total of 15.  Eastern Mennonite University is third with 11 titles.
