Six Apprentice School Athletes Named To Virginia Sports Info. Directors Association Academic All-State Team

Six Apprentice School athletes were named on Friday to the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association Academic All-State team.

Each Virginia institution, including NCAA Division I, II, and III, NAIA, and independents, had the opportunity to submit athletes to be honored.  To be eligible, student-athletes were required to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better. The student must have achieved sophomore status, and he or she could not have been in the first season of competition at their current school.

Jeff Leckrone and Mike Kinder were linemen on the football team.  Leckrone, a Chesapeake, Va. native and an electrician apprentice, saw time at offensive guard and center.  Kinder, a Zanesville, Ohio native and a heavy metal fabrication apprentice, was a defensive tackle that helped a defensive unit hold opponents to 15 fewer yards per game in 2008 than in 2007.

Rahshann Lewter from the women's basketball team was a selection.  A Hampton, Va. native and production planner apprentice, recently finished her career holding the school career assist record.  She was a three-time U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association All-American and was the 2008-09 Apprentice School Athlete of the Year.

Austen Damico from the wrestling team was a selection from the wrestling team.  The sophomore welder apprentice from Sterling, Va., won 14 matches this year at 157 and 165 pounds.

Junior Ryan Sweet from the golf team also made the list.  The Hampton, Va. native and marine designer apprentice had a low round of 79 and had a pair of top 10 finishes for the golf team.

Senior utility player Kyle Center made the list from the baseball team.  The Gloucester, Va. native finished with a .333 batting average playing the outfield, designated hitter and catcher.  He was a USCAA All-American and a USCAA All-Academic selection.
