2009-10 Apprentice School Athletic Year In Review
Golf
The 2009-10 golf season picked up four victories during the season and showed signs of good things in the future with its finish in the spring.
They opened the season with a pair of small events as they went to Delhi, NY to face SUNY Delhi in a dual match opening with a 323 round. The next weekend they hosted the Builder Fall Invite and took second in the event with a 331 round.
Following a tournament in Harrisonburg, Va., the Builders captured the Apprentice Fall Fling with a modified round of 218 as the low three scorers counted in a rain-marred event. They ended their fall season with a fifth place
showing at the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships opening with its low four-person round on the year with a 317.
In the spring, the Builders opened with fair showings in the Marlin Invitational (8th) and Lynchburg Invitational (5th) before starting on a strong stretch to close the year. They took second in the Builder Spring Invitational in another rain-marred event before winning the Builder Challenge the following week with a 321 round.
After a tenth place showing in the annual Glenn Heath Memorial, the Builders closed out with a pair of dual match wins. In a matchplay dual, the Builders defeated Shenandoah University 9.5-5.5 as each nine holes in a matched
scored a point and you won a point for winning overall. A week later, they defeated Danville CC in a two-day dual match in Danville, Va.
Junior Wade Traynham finished the year with the low scoring average for the Builders at an 80.6, with fellow junior Daniel Campbell coming in at 81.3. Freshman Michael Hastings was third in scoring average with an 86 and was one of two Builders to participate in all 14 events this year. Campbell won two medalist honors, while Traynham took one.
Football
A tough schedule met the 2009 football team as they had four nationally ranked programs in the first seven games, with three of those being on the road.
The season opener saw them travel to Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio and take on NAIA 25th-ranked Malone University. The game went into the fourth quarter before the hosts pulled away for a 35-19 win.
After a visit to NAIA 21st-ranked UVA Wise, the Builders opened the home schedule with a 67-13 win over George Mason University. In that game the Builders ran for 344 yards and scored a school record seven rushing touchdowns.
The following week, the Builders ventured to Florham, NJ and lost a 49-30 shootout with FDU-Florham where Phil Caralla threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns, while Bryan Cain caught nine passes for 120 yards and a touchdown.
When October hit, the schedule stepped up more with a rough loss to NCAA Division III regional power Salisbury University before returning to the home field. They took on Lake Erie College, a NCAA Division II program, for Trades Day and lost 36-3. The next weekend they faced NCAA Division III topfive ranked Wesley College for Homecoming and fell 39-0.
After a bye week, the Builders ended the season with three tightly fought games. A first-ever trip to Florida saw the hosts hit a field goal in the last minute as Webber International won 17-14. The following week, the Builders lost its ACFC finale 35-30 to Frostburg State. In the season ending Oyster Bowl, Southern Virginia edged the Builders 14-10.
Wrestling
The wrestling team took on a highly competitive dual match schedule in 2009-10 and finished with a school best record of 18-5.
They opened the season with four matches at the Electric City Duals in Scranton, Pa. where they went 4-0 in the event. After defeating both teams from the host school, they knocked off Penn State DuBois 39-7 before defeating NCAA Division II American International 22- 19 for the title.
The next weekend they went to Orlando, Fla. to participate in the Central Florida Duals and Central Florida Invitational. A split of the dual matches on the first night saw the Builders lose 22-19 to the hosts before defeating Marion Military Institute 31-14. The next day they took second out of 14 teams in the invitational.
Their next two events were tournaments where they had three top four placers at Ursinus College and finished eighth in a tournament at York College (Pa.).
December picked up with a quad match at the University of Maryland Baltimore County earning wins over Southern Virginia (60-3), RPI (51-3), Gallaudet (66-0) and the host UMBC 32-13. They lost their last match of the 2009 portion of the schedule 29-16 at Waynesburg.
In 2010, the Virginia Duals was the first event and they held true for the fifth straight year the Builders defeated a NCAA Division I opponent as they knocked off Davidson College 24-21 to finish the event 1-2.
Following a sixth-place finish at the Ursinus Invitational, the Builders went on a dual match run where they took a pair in the Builder Duals before winning the 2010 Builder Invitational the next day. One week later, they went to Murfreesboro, Tennessee and went 4-1 in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Duals falling in the championship match to Marion Military Institute 27-15.
After a second place showing in a tournament at the University of Georgia in February, the team completed its regular-season with a pair of convincing dual match wins over NCAA Division II St. Andrews Presbyterian (33-12) and NCAA Division I Campbell University (28-16).
In the NCWA Mid-Atlantic Conference Tournament, the Builders won the crown for the ninth straight year with five conference champions.
Two weeks later, the Builders came close to repeating as NCWA National Champions but finished second out of 79 teams. Senior Ty Holley won the 141-pound weight class making him the tenth NCWA National Champion in the history of the program.
Men’s Basketball
The men’s basketball team finished the year with a 13-12 record with a pair of four-game winning streaks during the season.
They opened the season with three wins in the northeast against USCAA members before coming home to knock off NCAA Division II Francis Marion University 72-67 in overtime. That marked the first win over FMU and what turned into the first of two straight home overtime thrillers. Nine days later, the Builders took NCAA Division
III powerhouse Virginia Wesleyan College into overtime and fell 76-73 to the nationally ranked Marlins. A last second shot bounced off that would’ve forced double overtime.
After a road swing that included four scholarship opponents mixed in with a pair of games against the Marlins, the Builders closed out the 2009 portion of their schedule with a pair of wins in Florida against NAIA opponents Johnson & Wales and Florida Memorial University.
In the first games of 2010, senior Eric Joe joined a special group breaking the 1,000-career point barrier in a road win at USCAA rival Rhema Bible College. The next day, the Builders gave sophomore center Tim Johnson a homecoming present in defeating Philander Smith College, coached by his father, in Little Rock, Arkansas.
They followed with a four-game swing participating in the N.C. Central University classic and a pair of games against eventual USCAA runner-up Southern Virginia University and NAIA Division I powerhouse Mountain State University. In the tournament at N.C. Central, sophomore Isaih Harrison was named to the All-Tournament team after setting a career high 18 rebounds against the NCAA Division I hosts.
To close out the season the men won five of its last seven games, including a pair of wins over NCAA Division II UDC, a road win at Southern Virginia for the first win there since 2005 and wins over NCAA Division II Washington Adventist and NAIA Bluefield College.
Harrison was named to the USCAA All-American squad after a season where he became the first Builder since 1995-96 to average a double-double averaging 19 points and 10 rebounds per contest. Joe was an honorable mention selection as he averaged 16 points and almost five rebounds per game.
Women's Basketball
The women’s basketball team faced a schedule where they took on nine scholarship opponents (NCAA Division II/NAIA) and nine games against USCAA opponents as they finished with a 9-14 record.
After splitting a pair of games in the Penn State Beaver tipoff, the Lady Builders took a pair in the Great Ships Invitational Classic prior to Thanksgiving defeating Penn State Fayette 81-39 and Briarcliffe 69-48.
Following a four-game skid, the Lady Builders knocked off N.C. Wesleyan 88-45 and took a rematch with Briarcliffe 60-37. In early January they scored a pair of big home wins over USCAA rival Southern Virginia 83-60 and NAIA Division II Voorhees College 74-63.
To close out the year, the team pulled off another scholarship win knocking off NCAA Division II member Washington Adventist 64-48 before scoring a key USCAA win over eventual national-tournament participant St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn 75-74 as Jasmine Pringle’s free throw with four seconds left iced the win.
Senior Shameka Warren was named to the USCAA Honorable Mention All-American team after averaging almost 10 points and five rebounds per game.
Baseball
The Apprentice School baseball team took on a schedule that saw them have 17 games against schools that participated in post-season competition and they finished with a 26-15 record.
It was definitely a record-breaking year for the team as they either set or tied 90 records en route to a fourth-place finish in the 2010 U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships.
After its annual Builder Invitational where the team went 2-3 against NCAA Division II teams and USCAA rival Briarcliffe College, the team went on a run winning 16 of its next 20 games. In that stretch included wins over NCAA Division III Tournament participant Castleton State, NCAA Division II members Elizabeth City State, Virginia State and Washington Adventist along with NJCAA Regional participant College of The Albemarle.
In early April, the Builders hit a skid where they lost fi ve in a row, but they rebounded to take wins in six of their last seven regular season games including a key three-game sweep of a USCAA series in New York to earn the number one-seed for the USCAA Nationals.
At nationals, the Builders opened with an 8-2 win over NHTI-Concord’s Community College before falling in a nine-inning thriller 2-1 to Penn State Beaver. In its first elimination game, senior Tim Kehoe threw the first no-hitter in post-season action for the Builders as they defeated Penn State Greater Allegheny 6-2. Senior Dory Fields drove in five runs with a game-tying two-run home run in the fourth and a three-run blast the next inning. Their run ended in its next game falling 10-8 to eventual runner-up University of Cincinnati-Clermont.
Fields was the leading hitter on the team with a .409 average while senior Jonathan Dehoux set the single season home run record with 13 among many other records he broke this year. Those two, along with junior Andrew Yonta were named to the USCAA All-American team and junior Ryan Wagner was an honorable mention selection.
In July, Fields and Dehoux were named to the second team All-State College Division team by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association.
