GREENSBORO, NC - A blistering start by homestanding Greensboro
College and a 16-0 run early in the second half by the hosts proved
to be too much to overcome on Wednesday night as the Apprentice
School fell 88-85 to the Pride at Hanes Gymnasium.
The Pride opened the game hitting 6-of-8 from the floor and
raced out to a 15-4 lead on a Michael McDuffie jumper with 15:05
left. The Builders responded with an 11-3 spurt finished by
an Antione Paige 3-pointer for an 18-15 deficit with 10:28
remaining. That proved to be as close as the Builders got
throughout the night.
In the second half, the Builders cut what was a 45-35 deficit to
45-42 on a Jason Arrington 3-pointer with 17:38 left.
Greensboro then held the Builders scoreless over the next 5:41
outscoring them 16-0 before a Paige 3-pointer stopped the onslaught
and put the Apprentice School (9-7) down 61-45 with 11:57 left.
Following an Adam Nicholson jumper with 10:55 left, the Builders
held the host scoreless over nearly the next three minutes cutting
a 16-point deficit to 63-59 on an Eric Ruffin 3-pointer with 7:59
remaining. The Pride pushed the back up to 11 points with
2:11 on a R.J. Smith layup for an 82-71 advantage, but the Builders
had one last run but Arrington's 3-pointer at the buzzer cut the
deficit to the final score of 88-85.
Arrington was the leading scorer for the Builders with 20 points
coming off the bench tonight, while Fred Spratley, Ruffin and Paige
were next in line with 15 points apiece. Greensboro shot
60.4% from the floor for the night, including 15-of-24 (62.5%) in
the second half.
The Builders now are off until Jan. 12 when they face USCAA
member Briarcliffe College in Long Island, N.Y. in the first-ever
men's basketball meeting between the schools.
