Late Charge Lifts Shock Over Builders 88-82

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – In a game that featured 12 ties and 15 lead changes, the visiting Washington Adventist Shock went 7-of-8 from the foul line in the final 1:44 to hold off the Apprentice School for an 88-82 victory on Sunday afternoon.

The Builders jumped out of the gate quickly racing out to an 11-1 lead on a Tevin Andrews layup with 15:46 left.  The Shock worked their way back into the contest as a Marcus Coleman layup with 10:04 left gave the guests their first lead at 20-19.

Washington Adventist, a NCAA Division II member, took its largest lead of the half on a pair of Brandon Washington free throws with 5:54 left to lead 33-28.  The Builders then responded with a 17-5 run over the next 4:06 as a Latrone Demiel 3-pointer put the hosts ahead 43-36.  A flurry of 3-pointers from the Shock in the final 1:48 was capped by a Daray Hill 3-pointer falling out of bounds at the halftime horn to tie the game at 45-all.

In the second half, the lead changed hands 11 times as the Builders gained a 69-63 advantage on a 3-pointer from Demiel with 9:32 left.  A Tim Johnson free throw with 2:57 left forced the final tie of the day at 76-all.  Marcus Coleman answered a layup from Isaih Harrison with a 3-pointer to give the Shock a 79-78 advantage with 2:09 left.  The visitors ended the game hitting 7-of-8 from the line as only a layup from Lavontae Thomas and a tip-in from Tevin Andrews put the Builders closer.

Harrison was the leading scorer for the Builders with his 15th double-double of the year scoring 23 points and hauling in 15 rebounds.  His 15 rebounds put him over 900 for his career and he also dished out six assists.  Andrews was next in scoring with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Thomas added 11 and Johnson chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds.  Apprentice School (14-7) out-rebounded the Shock 57-45, including a 23-13 edge on the offensive boards, but couldn't take advantage as they hit 39.1% from the floor (34-of-87).

Washington Adventist (10-11) was topped by Coleman with 32 points and 11 rebounds, while point guard Jamie Newton added 21 and 10 assists to lead four in double figures for the Shock.

Apprentice School returns to the home hardwood on Saturday when they face in-state rival Southern Virginia University in a 2 pm tip.
