We have come to the pinnacle – the number one game of the 2012-13 Apprentice School Athletic Year and it was the first event of 2013. The men's basketball team knocking off #23 Virginia Wesleyan College on January 2 earned the top spot on the countdown chart.
Virginia Wesleyan had defeated the Builders in nine of the last ten meetings prior to the Marlins coming to the Builders to start 2013. The 100-89 win for the Builders was the first time in the series that the Apprentice School put up 100 points on the Marlins.
The Marlins jumped out to an early lead, but the Builders closed the half on a 10-5 spurt as a Lance Darden jumper just beat the halftime horn giving the hosts a 51-46 lead.
In the second half, the Builders took a nine-point lead barely four minutes into the half, but the Marlins made one last run to lead by one with a little under 13 minutes left. A 9-0 spurt pushed the Builders back up 72-64 as Jay Melendez hit a short jumper with 10:05 left and Apprentice School never trailed.
Johnnie Ferebee scored 20 of his career-high 29 points in the first half to lead the Builders in scoring. Terrence Palmer added 14 points, while Lavontae Thomas chipped in with 13 points and seven assists.
VWC advanced to the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 round and ended the year with a 23-8 record and ended the year ranked 16th in the d3hoops.com Top 25. That win gave the Builders a three-game winning streak as they finished 17-10 on the year.
