Joey Maben, a former Apprentice School golf team member, enters his third season at the helm of the Builders golf team.
Maben, who graduated from The Apprentice School in 1982 as a pipefitter apprentice, played for legendary coach Glenn Heath from 1978-82. He was a member of the Kecoughtan High School golf team in 1975-76 before being hired into the pipe department of the shipyard in November of 1976. Maben was a gold athletic award winner as an apprentice.
After going through the school, Maben was promoted to Supervisor of the Pipe Department in 1982 before moving to planner production control in June of 1985. Presently, he is a Construction Supervisor/General Foreman for the USS Long Beach Deactivation, Nimitz class Overhauls and responsible for the Steam Generator Chemical Cleaning process for Nimitz Class carriers.
Through two years, the Builders have won a pair of tournaments and a pair of dual matches. In 2009-10, they won the Apprentice Fall Fling and Builder Challenge. In dual matches they defeated Shenandoah University and won a two-day dual match with Danville Community College.
"It will be an honor to follow in Coach Heath's footsteps, he had a true concern for each of his players," said Maben. "I was fortunate to have some tremendous teammates in George Riefler and Curtis Leggett, with the strong teams we had in the late 70's and early 80's. Coaching with BJ will be special and we will work hard with each one of our student athletes.”

One of Maben's first duties was to name B.J. Maben as his assistant coach. B.J., no stranger to area golf circles, had a record-setting career for the Builders capped by being named Co-Apprentice School Athlete of the Year in 2008.
The younger Maben graduated in February 2009 as a maintenance pipefitter after being captain of the golf team for four years. He was a three-time USCAA All-American and a four-time winner of the Glenn Heath Award presented to the MVP of the golf team.
B.J. was an All-Peninsula District golfer at Kecoughtan High School and a two-time Daily Press First Team All-Star selection. He earned his gold athletic award upon his graduation from the Apprentice School in February of 2008.
Maben holds the school career scoring average record (76.65) and holds four of the five lowest single season averages in the last 15 years.
"I'm looking forward to working with my Dad as he has been very involved in my golf career," BJ Maben said. "I will enjoy working with the team and helping them with their decision making on the course".
