Lady Builders knock off SVU for 200th win in program history

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - The Apprentice School women's team held arch-rival Southern Virginia scoreless for the last 5:17 as they defeated the Knights 65-58 in a key USCAA match up. That victory was the 200th in the 12-year history of Apprentice School women's basketball.

A pressing attack forced the Knights into eight turnovers in the first eight minutes as the Lady Builders raced out to a 19-9 lead on a jumper from Shameka Warren with 11:59 left.

Apprentice School continued to force the tempo and pushed the lead up to 35-18 on a jumper from Ashley Barlow with 3:43 left in the first half.

In the second half the Knights worked their way back into the contest and used an 11-2 run over a 3:40 span to cut the deficit to 59-58 on a Becca Denny jumper with 5:17 left. From there Barlow scored the last six points of the game for the Lady Builders to take the victory.

Barlow was the leading scorer for the Lady Builders with a season-high 17 points and eight rebounds, while Warren added 12 points and eight rebounds and Taquana Sanderlin chipped in 10 for Apprentice (17-6). Lynette Adams was the leading scorer for Southern Virginia (10-15) with 15 points and Kendra Romito added 13.

These teams have already earned berths to the USCAA National Championship Tournament March 7-10 in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Last year Southern Virginia won the title while the Lady Builders took third place.

"It's a very exciting day to get a milestone victory like this," said Apprentice School Associate Head Coach Judi Overbey who has been with the program for 188 of the 200 victories as either an assistant or head coach. "This win was not only for the current players, but all former Lady Builder players who have helped us get to this level. It was good to see the seniors go out in style and get us ready for the tests which will come in Oklahoma."
