A frigid first-half shooting proved to be too much to overcome
on Wednesday night as Apprentice School lost 59-45 to visiting
Chowan University.
The Lady Builders (6-7) never held a lead in the contest and
tied the game three times - the last being 7-all on a Tyechia Cooke
3-pointer with 12:31 left in the opening half. Chowan (5-12)
pushed the lead to 18-12 on a layup from Jashonda
Crawford with 5:10 left. A Cooke jumper 16 seconds later
proved to be the last points for the Apprentice School in the first
half as she cut the deficit to 18-14. The Lady Hawks closed
the half scoring the last 10 points for a 28-14 advantage on an AJ
O'Banion jumper with four seconds left in the half.
Apprentice School hit 19.4% from the floor in the first half
(6-of-31).
In the second half, the Lady Builders couldn't cut the deficit
lower than 11 points, which they did twice. A Natasha Jones
3-pointer with 5:38 left put them down 45-34 and a Valleri West
jumper with 2:14 remaining made it 51-40.
Junior Rahshann Lewter was the leading scorer in the game with
14 points and six assists, while Cooke added 11 points and eight
rebounds for Apprentice School. Brittany Nicholson and
O'Banion had 12 points apiece for Chowan.
Apprentice School now returns to action on Sunday to close out a
3-game homestand facing USCAA rival St. Joseph's-Brooklyn at 2 pm.
