NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - The Apprentice School outscored the visiting
Lincoln Lions 16-3 over the last 11:38 to pull out a 50-48 victory
on Saturday afternoon at Apprentice gym to snap a three-game losing
skid.
Lincoln opened the game jumping out to a 10-3 lead on a Sharell
McMillan jumper with 15:49 left in the half. The Lions pushed
the lead to 13 on two occasions, the last being on a Tanina Cook
jumper with 10:56 left for a 22-9 advantage. Apprentice
School cut the deficit to 24-19 on a Valleri West jumper with 6:44
remaining. That was as close as the Lady Builders got in the
first half as Lincoln pushed the lead back to 11 points on two
occasions and held a 34-27 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Lincoln held a lead for the first 15
minutes. Their largest lead of the second half was with 11:38
remaining on a DeJuanna Mosley 3-pointer for a 45-34 lead.
Apprentice School started its charge with a Natasha Jones layup at
the 10:50 mark and didn't take their first lead of the day until a
Rahshann Lewter layup with 5:08 remaining gave Apprentice School a
47-46 advantage. A Tyechia Cooke free throw and a Lewter
jumper put the Lady Builders up 50-46 with 3:34 left and the Lady
Builders held on for the win.
Cooke was the leading scorer for Apprentice School with 17
points and eight rebounds, while Tyisha Battle was the leading
rebounder in the game with 14 to go with her eight points.
Mosley was the leading scorer for Lincoln with 22 points, 10
rebounds, five assists and five steals.
Apprentice School now travels to Chowan University for a 6 pm
tip-off on Tuesday night in Murfreesboro, NC.
