NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - Junior Rahshann Lewter scored 20 points and
senior Tyechia Cooke added 18 points and 11 rebounds to pace four
in double figures as Apprentice School defeated U.S. Collegiate
Athletic Association rival Southern Virginia 77-71 on Friday night.
The win marked the first sweep for the Lady Builders over
Southern Virginia since the 2002-03 season. The Knights
entered the game ranked #1 in the USCAA Coaches Poll and Power
Rankings.
Apprentice School (9-11) scored the first five points of the
game and didn't trail in the first ten minutes. The Knights
took their first lead on a Tricia Dixon 3-pointer with 9:26 left to
go ahead 18-17. SVU (12-9) took their largest lead of the
game on a Jenne Comp layup with 6:42 left to go ahead 25-21.
Following a pair of Becca Denny free throws for SVU to go up 29-27
with 3:50 left in the half, Apprentice School closed the half
outscoring the Knights 8-2. A pair of 3-pointers from Natasha
Jones and Jessica Henderson and a layup from Jasmine Gerald put the
Lady Builders up 35-31 at the half.
The Lady Builders pushed the lead to 11 points in the first four
minutes of the second half with a stick-back from Serina Brandon
giving Apprentice School a 48-37 advantage with 15:35 left.
SVU had several flurries in the second half cutting the advantage
to four points once and five on three other occasions. The
last being on a Dixon 3-pointer with 11 seconds left for a 76-71
Apprentice lead. The Lady Builders hit 7-of-10 from the foul
line in the last 48 seconds to ice the win.
Lewter had a team-high 20 points, nine rebounds and seven
assists to lead Apprentice School to go along with Cooke's third
double-double of the year scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Senior Natasha Jones and freshman Serina Brandon added 10 points
apiece for the Lady Builders. Lynette Adams-Schroeder and
Dixon scored a game-high 23 points apiece for Southern Virginia.
The Lady Builders close out the home schedule on Saturday
afternoon at 2 pm against Trinity University (DC).
