NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - Freshman Tyisha Battle recorded season highs
of 19 points and 20 rebounds to lead four in double figures for the
Apprentice School as they held off Trinity University (DC) 66-59 on
Saturday afternoon.
The 20 rebounds Saturday made her the sixth player in Lady
Builder history to record 20 rebounds in a single game.
A tightly contested first half saw five ties and seven lead
changes. Apprentice School used a pair of Battle free throws
with 4:53 remaining to take a 17-16 lead. The Lady Builders
took a 24-20 lead into the locker room at halftime on a Jasmine
Gerald layup with nine seconds left.
In the second half the teams traded the lead six times.
Apprentice School took a 40-31 lead on a Rahshann Lewter 3-pointer
with 13:22 left capping a 12-4 run over a 3:08 span. The
Tigers pushed back and took a 48-47 advantage on a Sherrese Russell
jumper with 7:13 left. Apprentice School scored the next
seven points, but saw the Tigers answer back and take a 55-54 lead
on a Morgan Kellman jumper with 4:11 remaining.
That turned into the last lead for Trinity as a pair of layups
from Tyechia Cooke and Rahshann Lewter gave the Apprentice School
(10-11) a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
Lewter added 19 points for the Lady Builders who also had double
figures from Cooke with 14 points and nine rebounds and Gerald with
11 points. Ashley West paced Trinity with 13 points and eight
rebounds.
The Lady Builders close out the regular season on Monday night
at Division II University of the District of Columbia (16-7) at 6
pm.
