Lady Builders Rally From Down Nine To Beat NAIA Division I Voorhees 74-63
NEWPORT NEWS, VA.-Sophomore Tamara Davis scored 22 points and hauled in 10 rebounds to lead four in double figures for the Apprentice School as they used a 16-5 run in the last 4:30 to pull away from NAIA Division I Voorhees College 74-63 on Tuesday night.
The visiting Lady Tigers raced out to an 8-3 lead inside the first four minutes but the Lady Builders answered with a 9-2 run to take a 12-10 lead on a Davis jumper with 12:55 left. Voorhees quickly scored the next five points and held a 20-16 advantage at the 8:28 mark on a 3-pointer from Lafeyette Reynolds.
A pair of Ginger Corprew free throws cut the lead to 20-18 with 7:35 left before Voorhees closed the half outscoring the Lady Builders 15-8 for a 35-26 lead on an Antonia Robinson jumper with 47 seconds left in the first half.
The second half saw Apprentice School open up with a 17-7 run over the first 7:02 capped by a Jasmine Pringle 3-pointer for a 43-42 lead. Over the next 8:28, the lead changed hands eight times as neither team held more than a three-point advantage. A RaShonda Mayfield jumper brought Voorhees back even at 58-all with 4:30 left. Shameka Warren scored six of her 12 points over the next 65 seconds to put Apprentice School up 64-58 finishing up a three-point play. From there, Voorhees cut the deficit to 66-63 on a Robinson free throw with 2:03 left but that was the last points from the Lady Tigers.
Apprentice School outrebounded Voorhees 41-31 and shot 46.4% from the floor (26-of-56) compared to 43.4% from Voorhees (23-of-53). The second half proved to be the difference as the Lady Builders hit a blistering 64% from the floor (16-of-25) and 66.7% from 3-point range (4-of-6), while Voorhees was 8-fo-23 (34.8%) and 2-of-12 from 3-point range (16.7%).
Jasmine Pringle added 13 points and six assists, while LaTorya Grimes chipped in 13 points and six rebounds for Apprentice School (7-9). Warren also joined the double figures group with 12 points and five rebounds, while Corprew tied Davis for game-high rebounds with 10. Voorhees was topped by Mayfield with 20 and Robinson with 14 points.
Apprentice School will now hit the road to Greensboro, NC on Friday night to take on Bennett College in a 6 pm tip.
