Lady Builders Fall 58-40 At Southern Virginia
BUENA VISTA, VA. - A frigid second half shooting domed the Lady Builders as Southern Virginia University defeated The Apprentice School 58-40 in a U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association matchup on Saturday.
After a first half that saw the Lady Builders take a 24-23 lead into halftime, the hosts turned up the heat defensively. SVU outscored the Lady Builders 15-0 to start the second half as senior Shameka Warren's free throw with 14 minutes left put the Apprentice School on the scoreboard in the second stanza as they trailed 38-25. From there, the Knights went on a 10-3 spurt over the next five minutes to take a 48-28 lead with nine minutes remaining.
Sophomore Jasmine Gerald was the leading scorer in the game for Apprentice School with 17 points, while Warren and sophomore LaTorya Grimes added nine points each. Warren had nine points, nine rebounds and tied her career high with seven blocked shots.
Apprentice School, after hitting nearly 31% from the floor in the first half, was 4-of-23 (17.4%) in the second half. Southern Virginia took the opposite approach being 8-of-35 from the floor in the first half (22.9%) and warmed up hitting 16-of-35 in the second half (45.7%).
The Lady Builders will now see action on Sunday against USCAA rival St. Joseph's-Brooklyn (13-11) at 2 pm. This game will be played at Hampton University Holland Hall.
