Lady Builders Open home Slate With 81-39 Win Over Penn State Fayette
NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - The Apprentice School women's basketball team opened the home schedule on Friday night with an 81-39 victory over Penn State Fayette in the opening round of the Great Ships Classic.
In the other first round game, Southern Virginia outscored Briarcliffe 37-17 in the second half to pull away for a 69-49 victory. Briarcliffe will face the Apprentice School at 3 pm on Saturday, while Southern Virginia will face Penn State Fayette at 1 pm.
The Lady Builders opened the game on a 14-2 run capped by a Tyisha Battle layup with 14:21 remaining for that lead. A pair of Kayla Hatfield free throws cut Penn State Fayette's (0-4) the deficit to 14-4 with 13:27 left. From there the Lady Builders went on a 15-4 spurt to hold a 29-8 lead on a LaTorya Grimes layup with 9:36 remaining in the half.
In the second half, Apprentice School went on a 19-2 run over a nine minute span to hold a 71-28 lead on a jasmine Gerald free throw with 5:12 left. A Gerald 3-pointer gave the Lady Builders their largest lead of the night at 81-35 with a minute remaining.
Battle paced the Lady Builders with 14 points, while Shameka Warren added 12 points and Tamara Davis had 11 points and nine rebounds. The Lady Builders shot 33-of-63 from the floor (52.4%) and were 4-of-8 from 3-point range (50%). Freshman Valerie Creecy was the leading rebounder with 14 and missed a double-double scoring eight points. Ginger Corprew and freshman Jasmine Pringle added eight points each for Apprentice School.
Kayla Hatfield was the leading scorer in the game for Penn State Fayette with 18 points and topped the team as well with six rebounds.
