The seventh annual Great Ships Classic tips off tonight with two games at Apprentice Athletic Center starting at 6 pm. This is the lone chance to see the Lady Builders before Christmas as they'll return to the home floor on December 30 against Washington & Lee University at 5 pm.
The opening game will pit Southern Virginia University (0-4) against Penn State Fayette (0-3). These teams will face each other in Uniontown, Pa. on November 27. SVU enters 0-4 after a pair of losses to NAIA programs and a pair of losses to NCAA Division I teams Coastal Carolina and High Point. Penn State Fayette (0-3) enters after a loss on Tuesday night at NCAA Division III Waynesburg.
The nightcap will pit Briarcliffe College (2-0) against the Lady Builders (3-0). Briarcliffe comes in off a pair of easy wins over Berkeley College, NY and Cooper Union. Apprentice School enters off a three-game sweep through Maine defeating Southern Maine CC and Central Maine CC twice.
On Saturday, Southern Virginia will face Briarcliffe at 1 pm and Apprentice School closes the tournament against Penn State Fayette at 3 pm.
The Apprentice School wrestling team hits the mat this weekend in Orlando, Florida when they'll participate in the Central Florida Duals tonight and the Central Florida Invitational on Saturday.
Tonight's dual matches could be an early barometer on how the team will stack up in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association as they'll face the #2 and #4-ranked teams in the NCWA. Apprentice School, who is ranked third in the latest coaches poll, will face the host Central Florida Knights at 6 pm in a battle of the last two NCWA National Champions. Following that match will be the Builders against Marion Military Institute in a #3 vs. #4 matchup at approximately 7:30 pm. At around 9, the Builders will face Sierra Community College from California.
On Saturday, they'll participate in the Central Florida Invitational where they'll tangle with: Georgia, Georgia Southern, Florida Gulf Coast, South Florida, Florida, Kennesaw State, Florida A&M, North Florida, Mercer, along with their dual opponents from Friday night in a strong tournament.
The Apprentice School men's basketball team will be on the road on Saturday when they'll travel to Petersburg to tangle with Virginia State University in a 4 pm tip.
Apprentice School (2-1) enters the contest off a 77-74 loss to University of Maine-Fort Kent on Sunday in Auburn, Maine. Virginia State (1-0) defeated Pfeiffer 65-52 in its opening game.
This marks the first meeting with the Trojans in at least the last 25 years. Apprentice School has faced only St. Paul's and Chowan from the NCAA Division II Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The Builders are 3-2 against St. Paul's and have only played one game against Chowan since they joined the CIAA prior to the 2009-10 season.
