December 5 - Weekend Preview

A busy weekend of Apprentice School athletics kicks off tonight at 5:30 pm when the Lady Builders play host to Barber-Scotia College.  This marks the third meeting between the schools with the Lady Builders winning the first two meetings in the 2011-12 season.

Apprentice School (2-3) returns to action after losing 101-48 to NCAA Division II Virginia Union University on November 26.  Junior Kenya Wilkerson leads the team in scoring at 15 points per game and throws in nearly five rebounds and five assists per contest.  Sophomore Jessica Neighbors is next in scoring at 12.3 points and leads the team in rebounds at 7.3 per game.

Barber-Scotia enters with a 3-6 record after losing to NCAA Division II Queens University (NC) 62-47 on December 2.  Darrian Bush leads the Sabers in scoring at 14 points per game, while Lindsay Lee is averaging 13.3 points and a team-high 5.5 rebounds per game.

Men's Basketball

Saturday: University of District of Columbia, 2 pm

On Saturday afternoon, the men's team will hit the home floor for the only time in the 2014 portion of its schedule with a 2pm tip against NCAA division II University of District of Columbia.  This is the eighth meeting between the schools with UDC holding a 5-2 series lead.

The Builders (3-4) are coming in after losing a pair of games at the Elizabeth City State Thanksgiving Classic.  Senior Johnnie Ferebee leads the team in scoring with a 20.6 points per game average, while averaging 5.1 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game.  He recently broke the school career assists record, held by assistant coach Cliff Coleman, and now has 365.

Following him in scoring is junior Jay Melendez at 15.3 points per game and 7.4 rebounds, while senior Jamal Curry is averaging 10.3 points and a team-high 9.3 rebounds per game.

UDC (0-7) has four averaging in double figures with Kory Cooley averaging a team-best 13.6 points per game.  Geran Pope is next at 11.6 points and a team-high 7.7 rebounds per game, while Michael Terry is averaging 11.3 points and Quasim Jones is at 10.7 points.  They lost to Alderson-Broaddus 83-73 on December 3.


This Weekend: York College (PA) New Standard Corporation Invitational

The wrestling team makes its annual trip to York, PA for the New Standard Invitational tournament held at York College on Saturday. 

The field in this event is always one of the toughest events the Builders enter in the year and this year is no exception as six NCAA Division III nationally-ranked teams highlight the 16-team field.  Delaware Valley College is the highest-ranked team coming in at fourth in the latest NCAA Division III Coaches Poll.  Joining the ranked teams is Johnson & Wales of Rhode Island (11), Ithaca of New York (12), the hosts (18), SUNY-Courtland (21) and Brockport State (29).

Other teams entered include: Ferrum College, The College of New Jersey, Williams College and Johns Hopkins who all have nationally-ranked wrestlers.  Over 25 nationally-ranked wrestlers will compete in this event.

Senior Ian Jones sports a 12-1 record at heavyweight, while junior Josh Rodriguez is 12-2 at 197 pounds for the Builders who are currently 10-0 in dual matches this year.
