Builders Take Second In Home Invitational
NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - The Apprentice School wrestling team took to the home mats for the first time this season and came in second place out of seven teams in the 29th annual Builder Invitational on Saturday.
Sophomore Kevin Hill and senior Justin Gilliard each earned first place while freshman Austen Damico and Thad Lloyd took third place to lead the team in the event. The University of Central Florida won the event with 111.5 points, while Southern Virginia took third with 70 points.
Hill won the 125 pound weight class for the second straight year by winning both of his matches over Central Florida opponents. He opened with a 7-6 win over Federico Carosio who was second in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Tournament last year at 125 pounds. In his final match he pilled Frito Cherenfant in 1:53.
Gilliard took the 165 pound weight class by winning two matches. His first was a 15-8 decision over Dom Gary of Longwood. In the final he won by a medical forfeit over James Julian of Southern Virginia.
Damico went 3-1 to finish third place at 157 pounds. He opened with an 11-5 decision over Joe Eassa of Maryland-Baltimore County. After a loss in the semifinal, he scored a pair of wins by pin. He defeated Brian Rich of Longwood in 3:53 and Ryan Witzel of Central Florida in 2:30 to take third.
Lloyd went 1-1 at 184 pounds for his third place finish. He lost to Zach Sanford in his opening match 10-5 and then scored a pin in 2:29 over Adam Blake of Towson for third place.
Next up for the Builders will be a dual match on Feb. 1 against Campbell University at 6:30 in Apprentice Gym.
