The Apprentice School wrestling team currently sits in ninth
place after day one of the 2008 National Collegiate Wrestling
Association National Championships at the George Jenkins Arena in
Lakeland, Fla.
Three wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals in their weight
classes. Senior Justin Gilliard won his first match by pin in
3:15 and scored a 5-1 decision in his second round to make the
quarterfinals at 165. Freshmen Charles Robinson and Thad
Lloyd each made the quarterfinals at 184 pounds. Both had
first round byes before Lloyd advanced with a 19-4 win over his
opponent from Naval Academy Prep School and Robinson scored a 9-7
victory over his opponent from Marion Military Institute.
Seven Builders are alive in the consolations: senior Josh Flint
at 141 pounds lost his first match by pin and won his second also
by pin; sophomore Matt Perry at 149 pounds lost his first by a 5-1
decision and won his second match by forfeit; freshman Austen
Damico at 157 pounds lost by a decision and won his first
consolation match by decision; senior Eric Lybarger dropped to the
consolation bracket at 174 pounds after winning his first match by
pin and losing his second 6-5 to his opponent from Army Prep
School; senior Kendall Ridenour won his first match at 197 pounds
before losing in the second round to drop to the consolations and
freshman Josh Seal lost his first match at heavyweight and won his
first consolation match by pin.
Action starts again on Friday morning at 9 am.
